Research Interests

Mick has worked to develop individual and collaborative research projects and bids. These are highly relevant to both the School and College. Before joining the University he was employed by BT within their Radical Multi Media Lab, Adastral Park, Martlesham. During this time Mick was part of a creative community with a remit to invent and develop new multimedia technologies. One of the key areas of investigation was Locative Media. This has become an area of great personal interest, a subject which now drives Mick’s research and field of expertise. In 2006 he worked with Dr Drew Hemment, a prolific academic in the field of Locative Arts. Together they developed a project named ‘Mapchester’, a digital mapping project, which utilised community generated mapping data. This lead to his first written abstract and conference presentation. ‘Lockwood, M 2006, 'MAPCHESTER 'Producing an open source map of Manchester’. The Mapchester project has led to a working relationship with Rod Martin, a talented programmer. Rod and Mick set out to research and develop a commercial mapping platform. Over the last four years they have self funded this project, and have worked hard to fully achieved our primary goals.

Mick is currently finalising his PhD proposal entitled  Location Based Media, the Open Graph and Usability.” ‘An investigation into how Location Based Information and Services can / will link to the Open Graph and how usability can be developed to seamlessly integrate the user experience.”
