Biography

I began my broadcast career at BBC Radio Cleveland in Middlesbrough, where I cut my journalistic teeth reporting, producing and reading breakfast bulletins. And apart from a short spell working on the News at 10 at ITN, I stayed with the BBC for nearly 16 years, leading and managing news teams across radio, tv and online services before moving into academia.

I joined Northumbria University in 2008 as a Senior Lecturer in Journalism. Overtime a number of roles followed... Programme Leader, Programme Director and Head of Subject for Media, before becoming an Associate Head of Department for Social Sciences. With a passion for learning and teaching and delivering a quality student experience, the role of Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Learning and Teaching followed before becoming the Head of Department for Social Sciences in September 2019.

I joined the University of Salford in 2021 and now lead the diverse and vibrant Directorate of Social Sciences which is home to Criminology, Sociology, Social Policy, Social Work, Counselling and Psychotherapy and Policing.

Away from work I continue to work as a freelance journalist for Olympic Broadcasting Services and have travelled to all over the world, most recently working in Japan and China for the Olympic Channel News. Paris beckons!

In my 'spare time' I'm an adult and family magistrate on the North Tyneside bench.
