Current positions

Professor, Chair in Parasitology; Programme lead for BSc (Hons) Biology and BSc (Hons) Zoology

Biography

I did my first degree in Marine Biology at Swansea University (1988) and my PhD in Parasitology at QMW, University of London (1993).

I have over 30 years of experience (based in the UK University sector) studying varied host-parasite systems in the field and laboratory and employing a wide range of approaches, from traditional morpho-taxonomy through to molecular immunological measurements and the application of modern high throughput nucleic acid sequencing. I have made progress in approaches to the measurement of the immune system in wild animals and how this may be analysed and interpreted in studies of health and disease.

I joined the University of Salford in 2015.

Areas of research

Parasitology, Ecoimmunology, Ecology and evolution of infectious disease, Wildlife Parasitology, Aquatic Parasitology, Helminthology

Areas of supervision

Parasitology, Ecoimmunology, Ecology and evolution of infectious disease, Wildlife Parasitology, Aquatic Parasitology, Helminthology

Teaching

In addition to project student supervision at Undergraduate and Graduate level, and small group teaching in tutorial-based skills modules, I am module lead for, and contributor to, the Level 5 module Introduction to Parasitology and Infectious diseases and the Level 6 module Biology of Parasites. I also contribute to the Level 7 modules Principles of Epidemiology and Surveillance and Research Design and Delivery.

Research Interests

My work focusses on the interaction between the environment, the immune system and disease - including parasitic disease - and how this relates to fitness in wild animals and to health, welfare and productivity in domesticated animals. I also have a strong background interest in the general natural history of parasitic helminths.

I am able to offer a wide range of projects in these areas for postgraduates interested in joining my laboratory and am happy to discuss projects with potential applicants.
