Biography
Although a British citizen and a native speaker of English, I actually grew up in Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa. I've also spent time in Namibia and Botswana. While I'll always be an African at heart, I made the UK my home base when I turned 21. That said, I've since travelled the world widely, sometimes for work, sometimes just to explore.
I'm a former [UK] RN (Registered Nurse) and paralegal who moved into adult education in 2001. Prior to doing my MA in Applied Linguistics & TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), I mainly taught ESP (English for Specific Purposes, e.g. Medical English, Legal English) and professional business communication skills to working adults.
Since 2011, I've mainly taught EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and tutored students in academic skills, in the context of Higher Education, both as an in-sessional EAP tutor providing continuing language and academic skills support, and as a pre-sessional EAP teacher. I've worked for a number of different universities / other degree-awarding bodies, both in the UK and abroad (incl. in Europe, Asia, and MENA, i.e. Middle East North Africa).
As well as my mother-tongue, I speak fluent Afrikaans, passable German, rusty French, and a smattering of Arabic, Mandarin and Turkish words / phrases. I'm an avid reader and film buff (now my main leisure pursuits, rather than high adventure activities such as mountaineering, skydiving and off-piste skiing, all of which I used to do). I also enjoy watching rugby (union, by preference) and cricket (red-ball definitely preferred).
