Biography

Dr. Joao Soliman-Junior is a Lecturer in Sustainable Construction in the School of Science, Engineering and Environment at the University of Salford.

His research sits at the intersection of construction technology, digitalisation, sustainability, regulatory compliance and lean design management, focusing on improving the performance, quality and delivery of housing and healthcare infrastructure through digitally enabled and evidence-informed approaches. He is particularly interested in how emerging technologies, AI-enabled, data-driven processes and regulatory innovation can support more robust, equitable, inclusive, sustainable and efficient design and delivery systems within the built environment.

Joao holds a PhD in Built Environment (University of Huddersfield, 2023) and has developed a growing research profile centred on regulatory compliance in complex building environments, particularly healthcare infrastructure. His research explores how regulatory systems can be operationalised through digital tools and integrated workflows, contributing to broader efforts to enhance building design, construction and operation through better decision-making processes.

Alongside his research activity, Joao has taught across architecture, construction and built environment programmes in UK higher education since 2018. His teaching focuses on sustainable construction technology and digital technologies, with an emphasis on linking technical knowledge to real-world application through practice-oriented pedagogical approaches.

Joao actively engages with industry and international collaborators through applied and interdisciplinary teaching and research initiatives. He has contributed to several externally funded projects, including work supported by Innovate UK and participation in the transatlantic UVITAL initiative on living labs in social housing retrofit. He is also involved in several international academic and professional networks, supporting collaborative research development and knowledge exchange across academia, industry and policy contexts.
