Biography

Ian is a member of the British Film Editors Guild and an experienced broadcast editor with over 26 years in the industry, having worked across all major UK broadcasters, including the BBC, ITV, Sky, and Netflix. His extensive portfolio spans multiple genres, from comedy and documentary to light entertainment.

With over 100 credits to his name, Ian has contributed to numerous BAFTA and RTS award-winning series, including The Royle Family (2008–2012), Class Dismissed (2016–2019), Mobility (2023), and Dragons’ Den (2005–2012). His career has seen him collaborate with some of the UK’s most prolific comedy talents, including Caroline Aherne, Craig Cash, Peter Kay, Steve Coogan, and Sophie Willan.

As a graduate of the University of Salford, Ian is committed to sharing his industry expertise and passion for the craft of editing with the next generation of post-production professionals.

Teaching

Ian brings over 26 years of broadcast editing experience into his teaching, offering students industry-relevant insights and practical skills development. Specialising in post-production for television and film, he focuses on storytelling through editing, pacing, and narrative structure. His expertise spans offline and online editing, VFX workflows, and audio post-production.

Ian is particularly interested in preparing students for industry expectations by integrating professional workflows, collaborative editing practices, and emerging technologies into his teaching. He encourages reflective practice and critical analysis, ensuring students develop both technical proficiency and creative decision-making skills.

He is an advocate for experiential learning, using real-world projects, simulated industry briefs, and guest lectures from professionals to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
