BIOGRAPHY

I have an academic background in psychology and counselling and began my career as a psychology/counselling lecturer in further and higher education before moving into social work.

I have had a long professional interest and involvement in Family Group Conferences (FGCs) having been involved in FGC practice since 1998, an involvement I still maintain. I have managed FGC services, am an experienced FGC trainer and consultant and have managed the FGC national network as part of a previous role at Family Rights Group.

I have been a social work practice educator for over 10 years.

Areas of research

Family Group Conferences, Child Protection

Teaching

My areas of interest in social work teaching include strengths based approaches to social work, ethical issues in social work, developmental psychology and therapeutic approaches. I also maintain an interest in practice education.

I currently teach largely on the BA programme and am module leader for ‘Framework for ethical social work practice’ module.

Research Interests

I have an interest in research on strengths based approaches, participation and Family Group Conferences, and write and research on these areas. Current research includes evaluations of a number of Family Group Conference services and I am co-editing a book on Family Group Conference practice. Future research interests include the social worker/coordinator relationship in FGCs and young people’s participation in strengths based approaches to social work.
