Biography
I have a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry and a PhD from the University of Manchester. I teach at levels 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 in a number of subject areas, including Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences within the School of Environment and Life Sciences. I have more than 20-years’ experience in cancer research and glycobiology and have a diverse portfolio of research publications.
I am currently the scientific director of Kidscan, which is a children’s cancer research charity that operates from the University of Salford. In addition to supporting national research into the treatment of children’s cancer; Kidscan also offers an undergraduate placement scheme that allows Salford undergraduates to complete an industrial placement with Kidscan funded researchers.
My interest in science policy has allowed me to contribute to national policy making by working with the learned societies. I am currently honorary policy officer for the Biochemical Society, chair of their policy advisory panel and work closely with the Royal Society of Biology on issues relating to the government’s position on UK science and HE.
Areas of research
Cancer Research, Glycobiology, Drug Design and Discovery, Molecular Modelling, Tumour Angiogenesis
I contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching on the schools; biochemistry, pharmaceutical science, medicinal chemistry, chemistry and biomedical science programmes. I currently teach on 13 modules including proteomics and genomics, medical biochemistry, biochemistry of drugs and disease, drug discovery design and development.
I currently offer PhD projects in design of new cancer therapeutics, antimicrobial drug discovery, applications of glycomics in medical diagnosis and molecular drug design.
