Profile

Dr Darren Schofield is a lecturer in people management at the University of Salford, a qualified teacher, he holds a PhD in Education from the University of Huddersfield. Prior to turning to an academic career he held industry leadership positions including head of group commercial operations in a retail career spanning 22 years with Wm Morrisons Supermarkets Plc. He is a British Army Reserve Officer who has served on operations in Afghanistan, is a former Officer Commanding Leeds University Officers’ Training Corps and Commanded 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment throughout mobilisation, deployment, and recovery of the Battalion in support of the UK’s response to Covid-19 (Op RESCRIPT) at the onset of the Pandemic.

Research Interests and writing:

As a staff officer serving in British Army Headquarters, Darren has recently overseen an extensive 6-month research project which aimed to better understand Army Reservist Terms and Conditions of Service. He is also currently writing his first academic book which is due to be published in 2024 entitled: Vocational Education for Retail Buying: Workplace Learning and Training in the UK.

His research interests include, Vocational Education and Training (VET), social mobility in education and the workplace and understanding ideas of credentialism and meritocracy.
