Current positions

Lecturer in Environmental Assessment and Management

I joined the University in 1989 and have been a lecturer in environmental assessment and management since 1993. I have wide-ranging teaching experience in environmental management and pollution control both as a full-time lecturer and a visiting lecturer in China, India and the Czech Republic.

I have had extensive involvement in developing client-based consultancy projects for students studying for the suite of environmental science, sustainability and health programmes offered by the School. These projects involve establishing projects that involve postgraduate students working with clients to deliver solutions to environmental, sustainability, occupational safety and public health problems. This project work assists graduates in developing 'real-world' experience and professional skills while providing mutual benefits for the clients.

Projects are wide-ranging and tailored to both the priorities of clients and the discipline specific employability needs of students. Clients are drawn from an extensive network of contacts in the public, private and third sectors including large multinational manufacturing companies, local authorities and voluntary sector organisations.

Environmental management projects have included contaminated land investigations using XRF and ICP-OES, developing environmental management systems and procedures, assessing the feasibility of rainwater harvesting systems for business, investigating and implementing waste minimisation programmes and the assessment of low emissions measures for fleet management. Occupational safety projects have included evaluations of stress management procedures, the development of risk assessment and management protocols for occupational driving and the development of competency management systems for workers in high hazard industries.

Public health projects have examined the effectiveness of a range of public health interventions with both public and third sector organisations. I have also been involved in the development of wildlife ecology projects through collaborations between postgraduate students and wildlife conservation organisations and bodies.

My teaching encompasses all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate study. My principal area of teaching is environmental pollution including air quality analysis and management, water pollution monitoring and control, and contaminated land assessment and remediation. I also teach extensively on aspects of environmental management for business including environmental impact assessment, business procedures for sustainability (environmental management systems, auditing and sustainability reporting) and risk management.

I have contributed to the development of practice-based and professionally oriented postgraduate courses, which facilitate student-centred approaches to teaching and learning and provide students with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills relevant to employment in the environmental industries. The courses bring together a broad range of graduates from a variety of different backgrounds and offer significant opportunities to work on real client-based projects of relevance to the environmental industries.

Research Interests

My research focuses on the application of knowledge to real world problems working with a range of organisations drawn from my network of contacts. My current research work involves investigation into soil contamination processes and the implications for sensitive land use, evaluation of perceptions of environmental compliance obligations in high-risk business sectors, pro-environmental behaviour in business and the potential environmental benefits of green infrastructure. I supervise PhD and MSc research students undertaking work on sustainable waste management, pro-environmental behaviours, and environmental pollution.
