Students helm films for charity to mark Mental Health Awareness Week

Categories: School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology

University of Salford students have partnered with leading men's mental health charity Mentell to produce a series of informative short films for Mental Health Awareness Week.

The films were produced by second-year students on the BA Digital Video Production and Marketing programme and aimed at tackling the stigma surrounding men's mental health.

Our students were set a live brief from the charity to develop impactful video content that could be used on its social media channels during the national awareness week.

Working in seven production teams, the students created seven original films. The films touch on a variety of topics such as encouraging men who are struggling with their mental health to reach out for support, to show how important small conversations can be to delivering big changes and how making connections can reassure anyone who is struggling in silence.

Noel Mellor, Programme Leader for BA Digital Video Production and Marketing, said: "This collaboration with Mentell has been a truly meaningful experience for our students.

“Not only did it provide a chance to work on a live brief with a fantastic client, but it also allowed them to contribute to an incredibly important cause. Mentell's work is vital, and we're proud to support them in spreading this message.”

The project was designed to simulate a professional video marketing environment for the students as they responded to a real client brief, whilst being supported by academic staff throughout the creative development and production process. The brief challenged the students to use their creativity and storytelling skills to raise awareness, encourage conversation, and break down some of the barriers that often prevent men from seeking help, amplifying the charity's key messages.

James White, CEO of Mentell, said: “Working with the students has been an inspiring experience. Their passions, creativity and professionalism were evident from the start, and it's been incredible to see their ideas come to life. These films will play an important role in helping us reach more men and encourage them to open up.”

The charity and the University will support the films on their respective social media channels throughout the week with each of the seven films released once a day this week.

The project forms part of the University's commitment to industry collaboration, ensuring that students graduate with the practical experience and creative confidence needed to succeed in the world of digital video production and marketing.
