Sociology and Criminology graduate awarded Prize for Academic Excellence
A graduating Sociology and Criminology student from the University of Salford has been awarded the University Prize for Academic Excellence in the Directorate of Social Sciences.
Olivia (Liv) Wasp achieved the highest marks in her cohort and represented the university at the British Sociological Association Conference and National Sustainability Awards, and she has contributed exceptionally to both student life and public engagement.
Liv was an outstanding student and undertook innovative research on online misogyny, producing a dissertation on the effect of ‘manosphere’ masculinities on young women. She is recognised for consistently producing excellent work, bringing strong feminist perspectives to her sociological and criminological analysis.
Outside of university, Liv also has a strong commitment to supporting survivors of sexual violence. Following graduation, she will be staying at Salford, undertaking a master's in Social Research Methods, and then hoping to stay on to complete a PhD.
Liv said, “I’m so thrilled to have won the award.
“It feels great to be recognised for all of the hard work and dedication...and late-night library sessions!
“I focused my dissertation on a topic which is important to me, and I am excited to take this forward in future study.
“I honestly have loved my time at Salford, hence why I’ll be back for my masters! It was genuinely the best decision I ever made, moving to Salford University.
“I’ve had amazing support throughout my three years, and my time at Salford has completely shaped my future career ambitions, something which I previously was unsure about.
“I am so grateful for all of the opportunities and guidance I have received at Salford, which have contributed to my achievements throughout my undergraduate degree.”
Nina Held, Programme Leader for Sociology and Criminology, said, “Throughout the programme, Olivia has demonstrated a strong understanding of key concepts and theoretical approaches, and applied these with clarity and confidence in her work.
“Throughout her studies, Olivia has made a real difference in every classroom, always engaged, contributing thoughtfully and showing genuine interest in the topics discussed.
“Beyond her academic work, Olivia contributes to the community and makes a difference to people’s lives by applying her knowledge in practice through her volunteering work supporting survivors of sexual violence.
“Overall, Olivia’s academic excellence, her commitment to representing and enhancing the university, and her contributions to student experience make her a deserving winner for this award.”
