Thirty-six years later: one Salford graduate returns to celebrate another
Thirty-six years after graduating from the University of Salford, alumnus Paul Birks returned to celebrate another graduation. This time, he wasn’t collecting a degree of his own – he was cheering on his mentee, Ferhan, as he crossed the stage to collect his first-class honours degree.

Paul studied Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Salford before building a successful career in technology, software operations and consultancy. After decades working in the space, he chose to give something back by becoming a mentor through the University's scholarship programme.
Paul said: “When I was asked to become a mentor at Salford, I have to say I jumped at the chance. I really thought it was a great opportunity to give back to students who are coming to university. I’ve really enjoyed sharing my own story, showing them what’s possible. I’m really trying to encourage them to kind of paint their own picture for the future.”
For the past two years, Paul has worked closely with Ferhan, an Hg Access to Tech scholar, helping him navigate university life, secure internships and placements, and prepare for a career in the technology sector.
For Ferhan, the scholarship helped ease the financial pressures of university, allowing him to focus on his studies, while Paul’s mentoring helped him make the most of every opportunity.

He said: “Having the scholarship and also mentoring, that was the best experience, especially during my first year. I didn’t really know what to do in terms of internships. Having a mentor through every step, guiding me through how to apply for internships through the scholarship, that was the best experience.”
That guidance helped Ferhan secure an internship, complete an industry placement and graduate with first-class honours.
Reflecting on graduation day, Ferhan said: “Having Paul here and celebrating after helping me through first and second year feels amazing. I’m really happy and excited, and I can’t wait for the next chapter of my life.”
For Paul, watching Ferhan grow in confidence has been just as rewarding as seeing him graduate.
He said: “It’s been one of the most enjoyable parts of my career. When I first met him, he was quite shy, so I’ve really enjoyed watching him grow as a person. He seized every opportunity and really flourished, both as a student but also in the work placements that he’s been fortunate enough to follow through with.”
Returning to graduation brought back memories of Paul’s own time at Salford.
He said: “The venue is very different to my day, which was 36 years ago. So I’m a little nostalgic but also optimistic. It’s a great vibe, a really positive day.”
As he looks ahead to the next stage of his career, Ferhan is grateful to everyone who has supported him along the way.

He said: “I just want to say thank you very much. I really appreciate your help through ups and downs, even going through my CV and helping me find jobs. I can’t thank you enough for the help and support that you gave me through the experience.”
Their story is a reminder that the University community extends far beyond graduation. Through mentoring, alumni like Paul continue to share their knowledge, experience and encouragement with the next generation. As Paul and Ferhan celebrated together at The Lowry, their journey came full circle, showing how one Salford graduate can help shape another's future - and how today's students can become tomorrow's mentors.
