An Alumnus, philanthropist and leader of tech investment firm Hg has been awarded an honorary degree at a special ceremony by the University of Salford.

Nic Humphries and his wife, Jen, have been longstanding supporters of the University of Salford. Since 2021, through the Hg Access to Tech Scholarships and the Harrington Foundation, they, along with their daughter, Fiona, have helped create opportunities for students from less advantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education. Initially focused on technology-related degrees, the programme expanded in 2025 to include environmental sustainability courses, providing financial support, mentoring and career development opportunities for students who may otherwise be unable to access university education.

Their impact on the University has been significant, supporting the establishment of the IntoUniversity Salford Central Centre, two long-standing scholarship programmes, initiatives linked to Energy House Labs, and a two-year pilot of the Tutor Trust programme.

Graduates are almost four times more likely to become socially mobile than non-graduates, but the costs associated with Higher Education often put young people off studying. Many students who have accessed this support have gone on to develop successful careers, opportunities they would not have had without financial support. Through the support of the Harrington Foundation, students have been able to access not only financial assistance, but also mentoring, internships and career development opportunities that have helped shape their futures.

Reflecting on receiving the honorary degree and the motivation behind the family's philanthropy, Nic Humphries said: “I have some amazing memories of my time at Salford, I met my wife and made friends for life. We are all from working class backgrounds and were first in our families to attend university.

“It’s definitely me and Jen not just me, we work as team. I got very lucky in business, it was perfect timing to be in tech and we are trying use our money to give back.

“We are very passionate about giving opportunities to people who haven’t had them.”

After the ceremony, past and present scholarship recipients came along to celebrate their own achievements. Bringing scholars together showcased not only the impact of the programme but also the strong and growing community that has developed through shared experiences, support and opportunity.

Among them was James Galley, a current scholar and second year geography student.

He said: “Opportunities have been great on the scholarship. The biggest was some work experience I got as a result at Lancashire Wildlife trust, it was an amazing and valuable experience. I wouldn’t have had the opportunity without the scholarship and it’s inspired me to I’d let work in sustainable cities once I graduate.”

Nailah Khan, who graduated this summer in business management and now works for BNY bank, was also on the scholarship.

She said: “I’m a parent so coming back as a mature student it was quite a commitment to make. Having the support of the funding helping pay for materials and resources it really helped me and my confidence. I was happy to be able to be a parent and still study.”

During her second year Nailah applied to be part of BNY’s summer intern programme and worked hard to turn it into a permanent role with the bank.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Salford, Professor Nic Beech, presented Nic Humphries with his degree. Professor Beech said: “What an honour to be presenting this well-deserved award to Nic and family.

“The scholarships and support offered by them have changed so many lives for the better. His passion for both the city of Salford and our University is inspiring, as is his passion to help people fulfil their potential in areas that are vital for the future of our planet. Thank you for all your support.”

The scholarships continue to make a lasting difference at the University of Salford, providing students with the financial support, confidence and opportunities needed to succeed at university and beyond. As the programme grows, it will continue to create pathways into higher education for talented students who may otherwise face barriers to accessing it.
