As the coronavirus pandemic spread, the demand for mobile chest X-rays significantly increased, but not all radiographers and radiologists were up to date with this technique.  At the time, no readily available resource like this existed in the world.

Providing this world first e-learning resource meant that tens of thousands of hours could be saved in creating training materials and delivering training sessions; resulting in more time spent caring for patients.

The project was initiated by Professor Peter Hogg by co-ordinating a multinational team of over 50 experts, including radiography leaders from Italy, Jordan, Malta, Singapore, Switzerland, and the USA, who volunteered over a thousand hours of time between them.

Peter also brought together the European Federation of Radiographers, the International Society of Radiographers, and the UK College of Radiographers to enable the web-project to come to fruition within 4 weeks.

On his shortlisting, Professor Hogg said: “I am super pleased on behalf of the team that worked with Ken Holmes and I to create the web site. We know it has been valuable in the fight against Covid and it’s great to hear it has been used in 157 countries”.

Professor Margaret Rowe, Dean of the School of Health and Society, said:

“I am delighted to hear that Professor Peter Hogg has been shortlisted for the Smarter Working Live Awards. Peter’s international collaborative work during the pandemic was crucial in keeping the lives of radiographers safe, and we are incredibly proud to hear that the world first e-learning platform he created is being recognised.

“Peter continues to be a brilliant ambassador for the school, our students and the University and we wish him the best of luck at the Awards in November.”
