MA Public Relations and Digital Communication: Anuoluwapo's experience living and studying abroad
Anuoluwapo Salawu is an MA Public Relations and Digital Communications student at the University of Salford. She discusses her experience living and studying in Manchester and some of her current favourite places in Manchester.
Choosing Salford
“For me, I chose the programme at Salford mainly because of the course structure. I knew that I wanted to study Public Relations, and when I did my research, I had a variety of options, but the programme at the University of Salford stood out to me, especially the Social Media PR module. We’re in a digital era, and it is my goal to learn about how this aids communication.”
What's your favourite thing about the course?
“I’d say the structure, like I mentioned earlier. For instance, I’m currently on placement, which has provided me with an opportunity to gain work experience in the industry and learn from industry experts in my field. This excites me, especially since I do not have prior experience in PR.
I love how interactive my course is and how approachable my lecturers are. We had a field trip to City Press in the first trimester, where I was able to learn about the work life in a PR agency and what to expect when working with brands/organisations.”
What were your first impressions when you arrived in Salford?
“Ohhh the skies! They were so pretty when I stepped out the next day, since I arrived at night. I thought the city was very beautiful and lively, with various places that I planned to explore when I got here.”
How did you find the transition of moving abroad?
“I wouldn’t particularly say it was easy in the beginning. I felt homesick a lot, and navigating my new life was a bit tricky, but I’ve been able to meet new people, and this has really shaped my experience into a very interesting and positive one.”
What are some of your favourite places to visit in Salford and Manchester?
“For now, based on the places I’ve visited, it’s the John Rylands Library, Wagamama (for the bao bun), and Bunsik at Piccadilly Gardens. While I do plan to visit so many other places, these are the places that do it for me in terms of the experiences I've had so far.”
What do you enjoy most about living in Manchester as an international student?
“I’d say the creative economy, especially at MediaCity, where I’ve experienced various creative events that have helped with my creativity and knowledge. Salford is such a multicultural and beautiful place where you can learn about other cultures. As someone who’s interested in culture, this has helped shape my perspective about different cultures.”
Have you joined any societies, events or activities that have helped you feel part of the community?
"Yes, I participated in the PR After Hours event organised by my lecturer Michelle, and it was amazing. Seeing different PR/Comms practitioners in one place sharing about their experiences and being very friendly and open with us students was amazing. I learnt a lot and I look forward to what the future holds in my career."
