MSc Performance Analysis in Sports: Aristotelis' Placement with Manchester City

Aristotelis on his placement at Manchester City's training ground

Aristotelis came to Salford from Greece to pursue a master’s in performance analysis in sports. He dreamt of working for one of Europe’s top football clubs. He was able to make this a reality by securing a placement at Manchester City’s Academy. Since graduating, his career has gone from strength to strength, and he is now the Head Coach of U16s at Panathinaikos FC, one of Greece’s top football teams.

Choosing Salford

"I wanted to study performance analysis in sports because I’m passionate about using data and technology to improve athletic performance and gain deeper insights into the game. For me, the course is the perfect blend of sport, science, and strategy.

I chose the University of Salford for my master’s because the course is led by highly experienced staff who maintain strong partnerships with real-world sports organisations, making industry placement opportunities genuinely attainable.

Salford’s state-of-the-art resources stood out, including well-equipped sports science labs, performance analysis technology, and studios mirroring elite sports environments. These facilities allowed me to gain hands-on experience from day one.

Away from academics, campus life is vibrant, and there is a lot of support available. I was particularly impressed with the 24 hour library, range of active societies, and easy access to Manchester via the on-campus train station."

MSc Performance Analysis in Sports at Salford

"My course prepared me for my future career by equipping me with the technical skills to collect, interpret, and present performance data effectively. It also taught me how to apply analysis in real coaching environments, helping me bridge the gap between theory and practice, skills that have been essential in my coaching and development roles."

Placement at Manchester City FC Academy

"Salford prepared me for my career by helping me to secure a placement at Manchester City Football Club’s Academy, where I worked with various age groups before being promoted to working with the U23 squad.

During my time on placement, I collected and analysed training and match data, delivered weekly performance reports to coaching staff, collaborated with coaches to translate tactical and physical insights into on-pitch strategy, and supported the integration of academy players into first team methodology.

This experience greatly enhanced my analytical skills and gave me valuable insight into the values, structure, and high-performance culture of one of the world’s top football clubs."

Career since graduating

"My career after graduating began as a football coach in Saudi Arabia, before I then returned home to Greece to take an opportunity at AEK Athens FC Academy. Over the four years I worked there, I gained valuable experience and development opportunities. I was promoted from the Head Coach of U13s to the Head Coach of U17s in my final year.

This season, I have joined Panathinaikos FC Academy as Head Coach of the U16s. In this role, I will also be responsible for the coordination of international tournaments and events for the academy."

Final thoughts

"I’d advise international students to proactively try to gain relevant work experience, such as internships or placements, while studying, as this opens doors in the UK job market.

Knowledge is power, but experience is just as important, so always aim to work on gaining practical experience whilst studying.

Networking is key: build strong connections with coaches, clubs, and professionals in your field. Also, be patient and adaptable, as breaking into UK and European football can take time, but persistence and a willingness to learn will pay off."
