Jeffery Onyeme from Owerri, Nigeria always had a passion for aviation. After initially pursuing a career in IT, he knew that aviation was the path he should have always followed and came to Salford to study MSc Sustainable Air Transport (previously MSc Sustainable Air Transport Operations and Planning).

Read his story below.

Life before Salford

“Before starting my bachelor’s, I interned for a travel and tour company, which initially sparked my love for aviation, transport and IT. I then pursued an undergraduate degree in web design and development which led me to a role in IT admin. Whilst working at this job, I realised my true passion lay in aviation. It was this realisation that pushed me to pursue my master’s in Sustainable Air Transport Operations and Planning.

I knew when I was considering studying abroad it had to be the UK for several reasons. Firstly, I have a lot of family here and family is extremely important to me. In Nigeria there are some British culture and norms present, making me think it would be an easier adaptation to the culture. Plus, English is also our first language. Finally, as a lifelong Arsenal fan, it had always been one of my dreams to visit the Emirates Stadium.

I received two offers, but the modules offered at Salford aligned with my interests more. I also have a friend who had studied at Salford previously and they had spoken really highly of the institution which also influenced my decision.”

Studying Sustainable Air Transport

“The best part of the course had to be learning in a room filled with intellectuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, which made the learning process so much more enriching. As part of our induction activities, we had the chance to discuss our backgrounds which gave me a deeper understanding of my classmates and made me appreciate every one of them.

A memorable part of the course was definitely visiting Manchester Airport, which is less than a 30-minute train ride away from our campus, with the acoustics master’s programme.

During the course, I developed lots of essential skills such as time management, teamwork, research and analytical skills. The lecturers were very supportive of me – I am an inquisitive person naturally and I appreciated how they were always there to answer my questions and guide me in the right direction.

I took advantage of much of the support offered by Salford. One helpful element academically was the dissertation support. I initially struggled with writing my dissertation, but I attended a support class which helped me to understand the structure and research needed.”

Away from academic life

“I believe in the importance of giving back therefore I volunteered for Cancer Research, Forestry England, and participated in tree planting activities in Salford to support environmental preservation. Volunteering not only helps contribute to meaningful causes but also provides personal fulfilment, and I find it essential to support initiatives that make a positive impact on the world while pursuing my career goals.

I also joined the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), which gave me valuable insights into sustainability and allowed me to network with others in the field. Additionally, I worked part-time in the healthcare sector during my time as a student.”

The next steps

“I graduated less than a year ago and although I haven’t yet secured my dream job, I remain focused on preparing for the right opportunity while continuing to gain experience. Currently, I work as a Transport Administrator with the NHS and have worked in healthcare throughout my time in the UK.

My philosophy is that whilst you should have a plan to achieve your dreams, you should take the scenic route and enjoy the journey. By preparing yourself you’ll be ready for the perfect opportunity when it comes your way.”
