A. Gamaliel Bratte, an MSc Safety, Health & Environment graduate from Abraka, Nigeria shares his journey after studying at the University of Salford.

Why Salford

“The fees were reasonable, and I had the opportunity to pay in 7 consecutive monthly instalments. I was offered a scholarship on account of my excellent previous qualifications and experience.

In addition, the campus is a single bus or train away from Bolton, where I knew, I was going to live throughout my studies. Salford Crescent train station is literally on the campus.

I was also attracted by the diversity of students and staff, as well as the well-equipped library.”

MSc Safety, Health and Environment

“I enjoyed all my modules, especially discussing my thoughts about the concepts with my tutors, who were always open to discussions.

I particularly enjoyed the Professional Practice module, where I worked with five other course mates to produce a report and a poster for a real-world client.

I learnt a lot from my course but in particular, I found the group work, report writing and research the most useful. I also gained thorough knowledge about UK health and safety legislation.”

Career since graduating

“I have worked in Manchester since graduating, first as a Health and Safety Advisor and now as a Health and Safety Consultant. I have moved in record time from Advisory to Consultancy within the same company (in both cases, I have been signed off probation at least a month early).

While I am still learning, I have become quite the expert in issues related to research and documentation.

I was able to find a job within three months after my studies. Being able to work on construction sites during the holidays exposed me to a lot of health and safety issues and terminologies that helped me find a graduate role.”

Final thoughts

“Salford is an amazing place to live and work. There are a lot of things to do and a whole lot of calm and beautiful places to visit with friends.”

“My advice to prospective international students would be to research thoroughly and know what the career options (and requirements) are when choosing a course.”
