From Hansot to Salford: Arshiya’s story studying MSc Health and Global Environment
Arshiya Shaikh an international student from Hansot, India, shares experience studying MSc Health and Global Environment at the University of Salford.
Why Salford?
“I chose the University of Salford because of its strong focus on real-life learning and the way the course blended health and environmental issues. I was really drawn to how practical and current the modules were, and how the university encourages students to work on live projects with real impact. In addition, the supportive learning environment and diverse student community made it feel like the right choice and place to grow academically and professionally.”
MSc Health and Global Environment
“My master’s at Salford was a well-rounded experience. The course was taught through a mixture of lectures, hands on projects and group discussions. This made the learning experience engaging and relevant, I love the fact that everything was connected - health, the environment and policies and how they all came together in such an interesting way that all made sense.
The tutors were approachable and passionate, it was obvious they cared about helping us grow. Our Programme Leader played a remarkable role with her support which made a big difference throughout the course duration.
What I liked most about the course was the opportunity to work on live projects with clients on real-life topics. These projects gave me hands-on experience and helped me build my confidence academically and professionally. Participating and collaborating in practical projects made learning fun and meaningful. It was a great way to get me prepare for employment.”
Changes for the better
“This course has given me a solid understanding of how health, the environment and society is connected, and the value of this knowledge cannot be over emphasised. More so, the group projects with other students have helped me understand the power of working in a team and improved my presentation skills, so I feel equipped and ready to step into a graduate role and put all I have learnt into practice to make real impact.”
Work experience project
“I had the opportunity to work on a project with a construction company, looking into the effects of green spaces on the surrounding environment and public health. My role involved researching and making suggestions about how these spaces could be better designed to support wellbeing. With this experience I learnt how to translate theory into practice, and I gained insights into how professional projects are managed.”
Future plans
“I have got a couple of plans I am really excited about. I am planning to apply for a PhD because I have developed a strong interest in research, especially around health and food. At the same time, I am also looking into opportunities to work within the NHS, food companies or in an education department. I would love to be part of the system and contribute practically as it would also help me learn and grow.”
Advice to aspiring students
“One piece of advice I would pass on to a new and aspiring students would be; do not hold back. If you feel nervous, it is normal. Grab every opportunity, talk to people and ask for help when you need one. Salford has some amazing support like the askUS team. The city is welcoming, people are kind, and you will learn so much beyond the classroom. You just must take the first step. Once you do, it all starts to fall in place.”
