English Language Testing Factsheet
The information on this page is for students who have been invited by our Admissions Team to take the online English Language Test with Password.
This test is examined by the online proctoring company, Examity.
You will be tested on your reading, writing, speaking and listening in English abilities. Discover examples of the test.

Can I do a practice test?
You can view examples of the test before purchasing your test.
Once you purchase your test, you will be sent a code for a free practice test as part of your purchase. This test will not be assessed but will allow you to practice before sitting the exam.
If you would like to buy an additional practice test, you can buy one from the Password website. Please note, practice tests are not examined by Examity and results will not be shared with the University.
What IT equipment and internet connection do I need?
Before booking your exam, please confirm that your setup meets Examity and Password’s technical requirements.
Browser:
- Google Chrome
- Examity offer an extension that works with Microsoft Edge for students in China unable to access Google Chrome
Please turn off your pop-up blocker and ad blocker before the exam.
Equipment:
- Desktop or laptop (tablets, phones, iPads are not supported)
- Built-in or external webcam
- Built-in or external microphone
- Built-in or external speakers
An internet upload and download speed of 2Mbps with 10Mbps is recommended.
What rules do I need to follow during the exam?
You need to follow the rules for both Password and Examity.
Please read both handbooks carefully before taking your test.
What proof of identity do I need to provide?
You must show the online examiner your passport at the start of the exam. You cannot do your exam without showing this proof of identity.
If you have a British Residency Permit (BRP) please speak to our Admissions Team before purchasing this exam.
Who is this test suitable for?
This test is for applicants to the University of Salford who want to do a course at Level 6 or above.
This certificate is not valid for students who wish to apply for International Foundation Year Programmes or other programmes at Level 4 or below.
The University will recommend this test to you if we believe it is suitable for you.
You should not buy this test unless you have been told it is suitable for you by the University of Salford.
Is this test a Secure English Language Test (SELT)?
No, this test is not a SELT.
How much does the test cost?
As of May 2023, the current cost of the test is £85 payable online by debit or credit card.
How long will it take to book my test after I buy it?
We will write to you within two working days of your purchase of the test.
You will then receive an email from Examity with a link to book your test within three working days of your purchase.
There are usually test dates available within 48 hours once you go online to book your test.
When will I get my results?
Your results will be emailed to you and to our Admissions Team approximately seven days after you take the test.
When can I take the test?
You can book your test on a date of your choice with Examity. We will email you with the details of how to book the test after you have bought the test at the University of Salford online shop.
There are appointments available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. There are usually appointments available within a day or two of you logging on to book.
Can I buy the test now but take it at a later date?
No, you should do the test within two weeks of buying your test at the University of Salford online shop.
After two weeks, your code may no longer be valid and you will not receive a refund.
Will I get a certificate?
No, your results will be emailed to you and our Admissions Team.
Can I use this test to apply to other universities?
You should check with other universities before purchasing this test.
Please note, you do not receive a certificate upon successful completion.
Can I get a refund if I change my mind?

We offer a refund minus £15 for administrative charges if you request a refund before scheduling your exam on the Examity website.
If you request a refund after you have scheduled your exam but before sitting the exam, we offer a refund minus £50 for administrative charges.
To request a refund, please email Salford Languages to request a Refund Request Form. Please complete this form and return to Salford Languages.
Refunds can only be issued to the same payment method that were used to pay for the exam.
How do I apply?
If you have read all the information on this page and within all of the links and would like to purchase this test, you should do the following:
Reply to the email from our Admissions Team to inform them that you have read and understood the information on this page and would like to proceed to purchase and take the test.
Our admissions team will then email you the link to purchase the test from our online shop.
You must then take the test within two weeks of purchase.
