Twin sisters celebrate graduation in mum’s memory

Twin sisters Carly and Kelly are graduating together from the same course at the University of Salford today as they follow in their uncle’s footsteps by joining the police.

Carly explained: “Policing is something I’ve always wanted to do, from seeing my uncle as a police officer to being interested in policing programmes and the idea of helping others. I just wanted to become a police officer myself and be able to be a friendly face for someone in need.”

But their journey wasn’t an easy one. Both sisters applied to join Greater Manchester Police (GMP) through an apprenticeship route, meaning they were studying at university while also learning on the job as student officers.

For Kelly, juggling the demands of working and assignments was sometimes difficult. “Working in the police and trying to keep up with university assignments and make time for family too was sometimes a challenge. For instance, when the riots happened last August, we had to work extra shifts to support colleagues, and my rest days were cancelled, meaning I missed out on family time.”

Carly agrees: “Managing studies and working as a police officer was tough at times. I have young children, and Kelly's wife gave birth to their son halfway through, so the sleepless nights while juggling university and work were tough.”

“Our mum also needed our support as she was unfortunately battling cancer during our training. Sadly, she passed away in January, but she was always proud of the path we chose; even more so as it was her older brother we followed in the footsteps of.”

The sisters’ perseverance and dedication has paid off, with them successfully graduating with their degree apprenticeships from the university today. Kelly said: “We both always aim high and want to do a good job; we’ve got an amazing work ethic, and I believe that comes from our mum.”

Carly added: “I feel I’ve grown my skills and knowledge, being able to study alongside working, understanding the job better and also made some friends along the way. It’s been hard, but worth it if you put the effort in.

“I am not academic in the slightest, but the university were so supportive in my journey, and I will miss them!”
