Also known as false acacia, the black locust tree belongs to the pea family, Fabaceae. However, the small pods it grows are toxic and should definitely not be eaten! Its white flowers are very fragrant, with bees loving their nectar and they are often planted in areas near honeybee hives. Prickly thorns can be found on some branches and due to black locust wood being very hard, it makes great firewood.
