Travel to and from events is often the largest emissions source. Reduce it through hybrid access, active/public transport, inclusive travel messaging, and by capturing travel mode data at registration.
Virtual and Hybrid
- Offer hybrid participation to reduce travel while maintaining inclusivity.
- Record sessions and share with attendees who cannot join live; provide captions/transcripts where possible.
Active Travel
- Active travel includes walking, cycling and other human‑powered modes; frame guidance inclusively (not everyone can walk or cycle).
- Provide estimated walking times to campus from major stations (e.g., approximately 30 minutes from Manchester Victoria or 5-10 minutes from Salford Crescent); add route maps in pre‑event communications.
- Encourage cycling by signposting visitor cycle parking (available outside many University buildings) and ensuring access on the day.
Public Transport and Car Sharing
- Share rail/tram/bus options in joining instructions, including services that connect MediaCity (e.g., the No. 50 bus). University travel details.
- Encourage car sharing for those who must drive; include links to car‑share platforms and campus parking guidance. Try the Liftshare platform.
Business Travel (staff attending events)
For international travel, prioritise lower‑carbon modes where practical (e.g., rail/ferry/coach), choose accommodation with credible sustainability credentials, and book through central Travel Office to enable emissions tracking.
