Rowan trees are surrounded by folklore and myth. Each red berry has a small five-pointed star or pentagram opposite its stalk, an ancient magical symbol of protection and red was thought to be the best colour for protection against magic. They were planted outside houses, hung in doorways and worn to protect from all manner of magical beings and evil forces.
