Course details

All about the course

You will gain advanced knowledge of the principles of epidemiology and statistics in public health along with how to design a simple epidemiological study and understand the key concepts of study protocol. You will develop the capability to thoroughly and critically assess health status, health needs and analyse the biopsychosocial factors that determine a person's health.

The University of Salford’s School of Health and Society is an institutional member of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER).

Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.

What will I be doing?

Lectures, computer tutorials, case studies/problem-based scenarios, small group work and guided independent study to facilitate the development of critical reasoning and foster participation and interaction.

Formative assessment is provided orally, in class, or during office hours.

Teaching strategies will maximise the potential of online deliveries with Blackboard.

Employment and stats

What about after uni?

This module can be taken as stand-alone for the purposes of continuing professional development. You will develop an understanding of the epidemiology of public health issues and build skills in quantitative and statistical techniques commonly used to understand health.

"I undertook the the Epidemiology and Statistics module on day release from my full-time employment at Kirklees Council. The module was challenging but very rewarding. The course gave me new skills in critical analysis and refreshed my statistical skills. Also having been away from academia for many years it gave me an insight into the latest academic thinking and gave me new skills to take back to my workplace."
Sara Wilson, Senior Research officer at Kirklees Council, Epidemiology and Statistics for Public Health Single Module, 2016
