In a nutshell
This programme will help apprentices develop their skills, knowledge and understanding to carry out the role of a police constable in a competent, safe, and lawful manner. You will be employed by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) as a police constable throughout the duration of this course.

Alongside traditional training methods, the programme uses a range of approaches and resources to allow you to develop your critical thinking and become a confident independent learner. The use of simulation exercises will be a key feature of the programme as these exercises promote the value of critical and evaluative thinking.
There are a range of teaching and learning strategies for this programme which will provide students with a combination of academic skills, and knowledge alongside operational skills.
You will:
- Develop a range of critical, analytical, and problem-solving approaches whilst developing your communication and interpersonal skills
- Make a difference to local communities
- Be employed as a police officer from the first day of your employment
- Spend most of your time on the front line turning your learning into practical experience
All about the course
You will be serving as a police officer with GMP whilst studying academic modules. This will include a combination of campus-based studying along with policing training. This will enable students to link the academic skills and knowledge they develop with the operational competences they will demonstrate.
Year one
This module will introduce you to key areas of policing including response policing, counter terrorism, roads policing and conducting investigations.
Standards and Professional Development
You will develop key concepts in leadership and management and learn how they are applied in police settings.
Threats, Risk and Harm
This module introduces you to the concepts of vulnerability and risk, identifying those factors which place individuals and communities at greater risk.
Supported Operational Policing
You will link the initial academic phase of study to the workplace. Along with a tutor constable you will work on a GMP district dealing with incidents.
GM Communities and Partnerships
This module will introduce you to the diverse nature of the communities of the GM City region. It also examines the nature and importance of partnership working.
Year two
Operational Policing in Practice
Further areas of policing including response policing, counter terrorism, roads policing, as well as a more in-depth study of investigative skills.
GM Communities
You will critically examine a range of contemporary issues which include online victimisation, tackling online child sexual exploitation, online policing, and counter terrorism
Leadership and Vulnerability
This module will further explore the key concepts in leadership and management and their application in police settings. It also goes on to explore concepts of vulnerability and risk, identifying those factors that place individuals and communities at greater risk.
Year three
Strategic Leadership
Critically analyse key concepts in leadership and management and their application in police settings.
Complexities of Operational Policing
This module will critically analyse key areas of policing including response policing, counter terrorism, and roads policing.
Community Policing in GM
This module helps you critically analyses key issues in the policing of the GM City region including the multi-agency role in wider public protection and police community relationships.
Preparation and Completion of the End-Point Assessment (EPA)
This module will enable you to demonstrate occupational competence as a Police Constable in line with the published Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship assessment plan.
Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.

National Assessment
Recruitment to GMP is subject to successful completion of the National Assessment Centre process alongside specific GMP requirements.
English Language Requirements
International applicants will be required to show proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.5, with no element below 6.0, is proof of this. If you need to improve your written and spoken English, you might be interested in our English language courses.

GCSE Mathematics and English grade C/grade 4 or above in both or equivalent e.g. or Functional Skills Level 2 or Adult Numeracy.
You must fulfil the GCSE entry requirements as well as the requirements listed below.

Alternative entry requirements
- Fitness: We also want to make you aware at this early stage of the requirements for the fitness test. This is a test of endurance whereby you will you will be asked to run along a 15 metre track in time with a series of bleeps, which become increasingly faster to level 5.4.
- Age: Candidates aged 17 and above may apply to become a police officer and if successful may take up appointment once they reach the age of 18.
- Tattoos: Certain tattoos may exclude you from employment with GMP, this depends on where they are on your body and what they may depict.
- Convictions and Cautions: If you do have any criminal convictions or cautions on record you may still apply, eligibility will depend on the age and nature of the offence.
- Membership of groups and organisations: You will not be able to join GMP if you are a member of a group and/or organisation that contradicts our values or ethics and our commitment to inclusion.
- Previous applications: You must not have had a Police Officer application rejected by GMP, or another Force in the last 3 months to apply to GMP.
How much?
The apprenticeship levy was introduced in April 2017 and requires all employers operating in the UK, with a pay bill of over £3 million each year to invest in apprenticeships.
The funding policy supports the changes to the way apprenticeships in England are paid for, underpinned by the apprenticeship levy of 0.5% of the annual pay bill for companies paying over £3 million per year.
There is also a co-investment model for companies who will not be paying into the levy. The government will cover 95% of the cost of the apprenticeship and the employer will only have to contribute the remaining 5%. Once payments have been declared to HMRC, employers will now have access to a digital apprenticeship account from which they will be able to access funding to pay for apprenticeship training.
The maximum amount of money allocated to each standard falls into a specific funding band, ranging from £1,500 to £27,000.
The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship has been allocated the following funding band: £24,000.
