Travel disruptions

Salford Crescent station third platform

Network Rail are set to build a third platform at Salford Crescent station, a key transport hub located at the heart of our Peel Park Campus. The new, extra platform will improve passenger flow and reduce train delays by allowing more flexibility for trains travelling through central Manchester and across the country. To carry out the work, Salford Crescent station will close for these weekends between March and September 2025:

  • 1 – 2 March
  • 8 – 9 March
  • 15 – 16 March
  • 22 – 23 March
  • 12 -13 April
  • 17 – 18 May
  • 13 – 14 September

Due to the improvements, the underpass on University Road West will have a temporary lane closure with lights from Monday 2 - Friday 20 December, followed by a full closure from January 2025 to November 2025.

University Road full lane closure

Due to construction works for our Greater Manchester Institute of Technology building, University Road will have a full lane closure in place on Thursday 5 December (8:00am to 1:00pm) and Thursday 12 and Friday 13 December (8:00am to 5:00pm both days). No vehicles will be able to access the road at this time.

Frederick Road temporary traffic lights

Due to construction for Salford Rise, there will also be four-way traffic lights on Frederick Road for two weeks, starting on Monday 9 December. Further closures on the road are also anticipated early next year (dates TBC).

Current works around campus

Mary Seacole Car Park closing 2 December

Work is beginning on the new Health and Wellbeing building on Monday 2 December, meaning that Mary Seacole car park will permanently close.

You can find full details of all available car parking alternatives on the car parking page including information about disabled parking and a map of other car parks.

We know from our Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) review that there are often spaces in the The North of England Robotics Innovation Centre (NERIC), Wallness Lane near the sports centre and Farmer Norton car parks.

Students and staff can find more information on the Student Hub and the Staff Hub (login required).

Also, if you drive to campus, please respect our local residents and avoid parking on driveways and side streets. We have parking spaces on campus, including 90 designated for disabled parking.

Reduced number of spaces in Acton car park

A wall has collapsed in Acton car park (Christchurch Avenue, near to The Old Fire Station building), reducing the number of spaces available whilst Salford City Council carry out the repair work. From Friday 29 November, 11 spaces will be out of use whilst the repairs take place.

New Buildings

Health Building

Our Frederick Road campus is being developed to expand our in-house clinics, to support your learning and experience and to support our wider community’s health needs. We've recently received planning permission of our new Health Building. Work will begin in late November 2024 and the target completion date is Autumn 2026.

Greater Manchester Insititute of Technology (GMIoT) Building

We received planning permission for Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT) Building on Peel Park campus across from University House. Piling works are due to start on Monday 2 December until Tuesday 31 January. As a result, there may be some unavoidable noise and vibrations noticeable for buildings in close proximity, like the SEE Building, University House and the Faith Centre. Mitigations are in place, with designated quiet spaces across campus for staff and students to work peacefully during noisy periods. You can find a list of quiet spots around campus on the website.

Greater Manchester Institute of Technology: Building work FAQs

When will the building works take place?

Preparatory works are taking place outside the SEE building – from September through to November 2024. The construction will run from November 2024 to December 2025, however the peak disruptive elements are limited to three months (November 2024 to January 2025).

What are you doing to reduce the impact?

We understand the work is near to other buildings and student accommodation. Please be assured we are doing everything we can to ensure noise disturbance is as minimal as possible.

We are planning construction timing, so it protects quiet times in the morning, evening and overnight. Works will take place 08:00-18:00 Monday to Friday. There will be no work on Sundays or Bank Holidays – there is a small chance work may happen on Saturdays from 09:00-14:00 but currently there are no plans in place for weekend work.

What is the building for?

The construction is for the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), a flagship technical skills building that will benefit students across Greater Manchester. The GMIoT is led by the University of Salford, with Wigan & Leigh College as the lead further education partner.

Where can I study across campus?

While we are not anticipating too much noise disturbance, there are lots of study spaces across campus, along with quiet places to work.

Study spaces across campus can be found here: Student Spaces on Campus - Made in Salford

You can find a list of quiet spots around campus here: Campus quiet spaces and where to find them - Made in Salford

Will access to accommodation be affected?

Only access to the current GMIoT construction area will be restricted across from University House. A small number of times the road or footpath may be closed for deliveries or the moving of materials, with minimum disruption.

Will parking at campus accommodation be affected?

There will be no foreseen disruptions to accommodation parking.

Will access to Peel Park Quarter accommodation (Delaney 1, Delaney 2, Daber & Unsworth) be affected?

There should be no access restrictions to these areas.  There will be times when deliveries take place which may cause short disruption.

Which blocks/rooms are closest to the construction?

Construction will be taking place near to Peel Park Quarter across from University House. Daber and Delaney 1 are the closest blocks to the construction with Delaney 2 and Unsworth set further back.

Can I move to another room?

Peel Park Quarter is very popular accommodation and fully booked so we are unable to move residents. However, we’re confident the mitigations we’ve put in place will reduce any impact on your stay.

How is biodiversity affected by the build?

In line with our sustainability objectives, it is important that the development has a positive impact (net gain) on biodiversity, compared to what was there before. An ecology survey has taken place on the site to determine the biodiversity net gain. We are pleased that this is estimated to be +25%, significantly higher than the 10% imposed by statutory planning.
