Reasonable Adjustment Plans

Reasonable Adjustment Plans (RAPs) are support plans we can put in place to ensure you have fair and equal access to your education.

A RAP is tailored to your individual needs, but might include things like:

  • Exam adjustments such as extra time or use of a computer
  • Coursework adjustments such as a 1-week extension
  • Presentation adjustments
  • In-class adjustments

You can get a RAP at any point in your studies.

If you’re a prospective student, you can get your RAP prepared before you start your studies, so that your adjustments are ready when you arrive.

How do I get a Reasonable Adjustment Plan?

The first step is to register with our service and provide medical evidence

When you’re registered, you will receive an email from us with next steps.

If you’re a current student, this email will include:

  • A link to an online form where you can self-select any Exam and Assessments adjustments you need (like 25% extra time in exams or a coursework extension)
  • A link to book an optional appointment with a Disability Inclusion Advisor, if you need any additional adjustments or support which aren’t included in the above form

If you’re a prospective student, you will receive instructions on how to book in an appointment with a Disability Inclusion Advisor to discuss your RAP.

If you’re struggling to book in, please contact askUS:

What types of RAPs are there?

Types of Reasonable Adjustment Plans
RAP - exams and assessments only

A RAP for exams and assessments only is available for current students. If you’re a prospective student, you will need to book an appointment with us to get your RAP in place.

A RAP for exams and assessments will be made for you once you have selected what adjustments you need using our online Exams and Assessments Adjustments form. This form is emailed to you upon registration with the Disability Inclusion Service.

This RAP will be tailored to your needs, but could include things like:

  • A coursework extension
  • Extra time in exams
  • Room arrangements for exams
  • Use of a computer in exams
  • Rest breaks in exams

Once completed, the RAP will be distributed to relevant University staff. You will receive a copy via email.

You do not need to meet with a Disability Inclusion Advisor to get exams and assessments adjustments in place! If you only require adjustments to your exams and assessments, you do not need to book a full Reasonable Adjustments Plan appointment with us.

Full RAP

If you require additional support, you can then book in a Reasonable Adjustments Plan appointment with a Disability Inclusion Advisor. This appointment can be in person, on Microsoft Teams, or over the phone.

In the appointment, we’ll discuss what barriers may be present in your course so we can understand what additional support you might need. This RAP will be tailored to your needs, but could include things like:

  • Exam and assessment adjustments
  • Adjustments to presentations
  • In-class adjustments
  • Key information about you that is useful for staff to know, where appropriate

Once completed, the RAP will be distributed to relevant University staff. You will receive a copy via email.

Practice RAP (PRAP) for placements

Practice Reasonable Adjustment Plans (PRAP) are for students who may need adjustments in placement settings. This includes:

  • Students with any additional needs
  • Students awaiting diagnostic assessment
  • Students with temporary conditions

PRAPs can complement your existing academic focused RAP but are designed to meet your specific learning needs in both practice-based or work-based learning settings.

You do not need to have an academic RAP to access this support, and it is not compulsory for you to have a PRAP if you do have any additional needs. These plans are designed to accommodate your specific requirements, so you can fully access all learning opportunities making working environments more inclusive and understanding of any specific needs you may have.

The content of the PRAP is led by you. Your personal tutor and other professionals will work with you to identify areas you may need additional considerations in the workplace.

Please speak to your personal tutor or our Disability Inclusion Service for more information and to discuss this offer further.

Postgraduate Research RAP

The nature of completing a research degree is very different to completing a taught course, and very individual to the student. You are eligible for additional support through the Disability Inclusion Service if you have disability or long-term health condition that impacts on your studies.

A PGR Reasonable Adjustments Plan (RAP) ensures staff supervising and assessing you understand your needs any barriers you may experience. The RAP is tailored to the PGR pathway of study and the types of assessment you’ll be expected to complete. Adjustments might include:

  • Reasonable adjustments to your oral assessments, such as rest breaks, consideration of scheduling (e.g. morning or afternoon start), the opportunity to meet examiners and see the assessment room prior to the assessment
  • Adjustments to your supervision sessions
  • Adjustments to your training sessions

We can also help you apply for funded disability support, such as Disabled Students Allowances. Most home PGR students are eligible for additional funded support, which could include things like one-to-one coaching, mentoring and assistive software.

Does my RAP roll over each year?

Yes – if you stay on the same course, your RAP will automatically be in place until you graduate.

If you change courses or progress to postgraduate study, you need to let us know so that your RAP can be reviewed and redistributed to the correct programme.

How do I change or review my RAP?

If you’d like to change or review your RAP, you can do so by contacting your named Disability Inclusion Adviser or the Disability Inclusion Service on disability@salford.ac.uk.
