Bowmer and Kirkland - apprentice employer case study

We spoke to Bethan Marsh, Early Careers Manager at Bowmer and Kirkland, to find out how a longstanding commitment to sponsoring and developing homegrown talent, and a collaborative partnership with the University of Salford, have become central to their future succession planning.

We asked Bethan...

How have apprenticeships supported workforce development, skills growth, or staff retention within your organisation?

Our apprenticeship scheme forms the foundation of the early careers offering at Bowmer and Kirkland Ltd. We invest in our apprentices, and in turn they reward us with loyalty, hard work and commitment. It is truly a case of reaping what you sow.

What motivated your organisation to offer apprenticeships, and why did you choose the University of Salford as your training provider?

We had always sponsored students through degrees prior to the introduction of the professional construction apprenticeship standards, so it made sense for us to continue with this approach.

The University of Salford are an excellent apprenticeship provider who offers a truly collaborative experience, with a really supportive and communicative team who are always on hand to answer any queries or concerns regarding our apprentices and the courses themselves.

What are the key benefits apprenticeships bring to your organisation?

Apprenticeships are a key component of our future succession plan. We feel it is invaluable to have homegrown talent who learn not only the industry but our business specifically.

Based on your experience, would you recommend apprenticeships and the University of Salford to other organisations?

We would recommend apprenticeships to everyone. We believe it is a great partnership to form among the learner, employer, and university. The support network this offers to the learner is a great way to ensure their long-term success, both academically and in the workplace.

What advice would you give to organisations considering apprenticeships for the first time?

Any reservations you may have about apprenticeships can be allayed if you are looking to work with a provider such as the University of Salford. They will be there to offer support and guidance on any areas where you may feel a bit unsure.

Regarding the learners themselves, if you offer them the same support and guidance, you will be rewarded with loyal, committed employees.
