Karolina Borkowska - CertHE Construction Site Supervisor
Karolina Borkowska demonstrates how apprenticeships provide an effective route into construction by combining academic learning with real‑world site experience. Karolina’s journey highlights the value of earning while learning, gaining confidence by applying university knowledge directly to live projects.
We asked Karolina...
What made you want to pursue construction?
After finishing my master’s degree in science, I wasn’t sure what to do or how to find a job without any relevant experience. I began my career in construction in a business support role, assisting various teams with their day-to-day tasks.
It was during this time that I realised I genuinely enjoy construction; the variety of projects, the different types of work, and the constant challenges make it both interesting and rewarding. I never imagined I would work in construction, yet now I absolutely love what I do.
Why did you choose to study an apprenticeship?
I chose an apprenticeship because I was asked if I wanted to continue in construction and take on something more. I decided on this career path because it offered the best opportunity to work and study simultaneously.
I believe it is the ideal way to gain practical knowledge and apply it. It has allowed me to learn directly on site, develop new skills, and be part of real projects from the very beginning.
What does your apprenticeship involve day to day?
I have my university day on Mondays, where I focus on gaining knowledge and becoming more familiar with industry terminology. The rest of the week, I work as a Graduate Project Manager, supporting my team with various tasks.
At the moment, I’m working on a high-rise project that requires me to be on-site three days a week to observe and understand the daily progress. This combination of study and practical experience has been valuable in developing my skills and understanding of the construction process.
Looking back over your time on the apprenticeship so far, how have you found the whole experience?
As someone who already holds a degree that wasn’t completed through an apprenticeship, I can say that an apprenticeship is one of the best options you can choose. I really enjoy knowing that the knowledge and skills I gain at university are directly useful in my work. It’s a great feeling to learn something, then apply it on-site and become familiar with the terminology and processes used in real projects.
Overall, the experience has been extremely valuable in developing both my practical skills and my understanding of the construction industry.
How would you describe the support that you’ve received from the University of Salford?
I’m very happy with all the support I’ve received. I have a personal coach who provides guidance and helps with any queries I may have. The regular meetings with my personal development coach and line manager are useful for tracking my progress and keeping everything on track. As part of my degree, which involves achieving CIOB membership, the university has been extremely supportive at every stage of this process, so I don’t have to worry about making mistakes.
I can also say that the lecturers are very helpful, offering feedback while we work on assignments and answering questions throughout the week. Overall, I feel well supported in both my academic and professional development.
What has been your proudest achievement in your apprenticeship to date?
I’m proud of the progress I’ve made and the results I’ve achieved so far. I feel confident in my work because I now have a much deeper understanding of the tasks and processes involved. Being able to apply what I’ve learned at university directly on site and see the impact of my contributions has been particularly rewarding.
What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
There isn’t a better career option than an apprenticeship. If someone has the opportunity, I would encourage them to take it without hesitation. There’s nothing better than being able to study and work at the same time, gaining both knowledge and practical experience simultaneously.
Do you have any advice for future apprentices?
My advice to future apprentices is to stay organised and systematic. As you are working and studying at the same time, it’s important to have strong time management skills to ensure you can meet all university deadlines while keeping up with your work responsibilities.
