Why did you choose to study an apprenticeship?
I chose an apprenticeship because I wanted the experience and the skills, as well as academic training, to make me a well-rounded surveyor.
Looking back over your time on the apprenticeship so far, how have you found the whole experience?
So far, I have enjoyed it! Working for a company like Mace means I can travel to different areas and work on well-known projects and going to university means I also have a social life with people my age.
How would you describe the support that you’ve received from the University of Salford?
The University of Salford have been immensely helpful with my studies and even work-related situations. They’ve always been involved in my studies and my work, checking in with progress meetings.
What has been your proudest achievement on your apprenticeship to date?
So far, my greatest achievement has been gaining more responsibilities at work. This shows the trust my line manager has in me.
What do you want to do once you complete your apprenticeship?
Once I complete my apprenticeship, I will be a fully qualified chartered surveyor and want to continue in that profession.
What led you to a career in construction?
I was drawn to construction as I have an appreciation for the built environment, especially the field I am in, which is a perfect mix of contract work and practical work.
What advice would you give to other women who are interested in pursuing a career in construction?
I would tell women who are interested in pursuing a career in construction that it’s the best decision I made. Although there are not as many women in the field yet, it is growing and there are so many different pathways to take in construction.
How do you think the sector can attract more female candidates?
I think the sector could generally advertise itself more, but include women, women of colour, in the campaigns, and they could also they could do school/college/university visits.
