Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award

Honouring a Salford graduate who’s made a lifelong impact — excelling in their field, leading by example, and helping others through their dedication and service.

Simon is a global pioneer in in vitro fertilisation whose work has transformed fertility care for millions. After graduating from Salford in 1975, he joined Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe, contributing to the birth of the world’s first IVF baby, Louise Brown. He became Deputy Scientific Director at Bourn Hall, organised the first international IVF conference, and later co-founded CARE Fertility.

Simon also established the world’s first master’s degrees in assisted reproduction, published over 200 papers, and advised governments and international organisations on fertility ethics and policy.

Ian has spent over 30 years in the construction industry and founded Gallaway Construction more than 20 years ago with a vision built on fairness, trust, and strong relationships. Under his leadership as Managing Director, Gallaway has grown into a nationally respected contractor, delivering high-quality projects across healthcare, education, water, civil engineering and commercial sectors.

Known for his hands-on approach, Ian nurtures talent, supports young professionals, and strengthens community links. For him, true success is measured not just in completed projects, but in the people supported and communities enriched along the way.

Duncan is the founder and Chief Executive of We Are Survivors, a charity providing therapeutic and advocacy support for male, trans and non-binary victims of sexual abuse, rape and exploitation. A psychotherapist and respected sector leader, he has advised the Government, NHS, CPS and police forces, shaping policies including the UK Victim Strategy and the Cross-Government Position Statement on Male Victims of Crime. 

Duncan has also raised awareness through media, theatre and television, including Hollyoaks and Coronation Street. Recognised with an OBE in 2020, he continues to champion victims’ voices nationally and internationally.

BA Politics, Class of 2012

Joe is Chief Executive of the Aplastic Anaemia Trust, where he is driving growth in research, patient support, and system change for people with rare bone marrow conditions. Previously, as Chief Executive of Pancreatic Cancer Action, he secured landmark changes to NICE and Scottish referral guidelines, ensuring that patients over 60 with new-onset diabetes and weight loss are automatically referred for CT scans. This reform could save 1,000–3,000 lives each year.

He also worked with NHS England to create a new case-finding protocol, expanded GP and pharmacy referral routes, and developed tailored resources for patients, including those with genetic risks.

Hanif is a Ugandan-born structural engineer, Harvard Professor in Practice, and cofounder and Design Director of AKT II, an award-winning interdisciplinary engineering practice with over 350 staff working across more than 50 countries. He has led globally recognised sustainable projects, including Bloomberg’s European HQ and the Masdar Institute, and contributed to four RIBA Stirling Prize-winning buildings. A pioneer in low-carbon, circular, and design-led engineering, Hanif mentors emerging engineers and architects, shapes policy through the UK National Infrastructure Commission and Aga Khan Development Network, and champions innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and excellence across the built environment worldwide.

CertHE Wildlife & Practical Conservation, Class of 2019

Mark has dedicated his work to transforming green spaces into vibrant hubs for community engagement, education and environmental sustainability. In 2019, he revitalised the Buile Hill Park greenhouse and gardens through Growing Togetherness, creating accessible pathways, a large greenhouse and communal growing areas. He also collaborated with the University of Salford to develop the Community Growing Space behind Clifford Whitworth Library, enhancing biodiversity and providing a tranquil space for students, staff and local residents. 

Mark has supported volunteers in restoring the Working Class Movement Library gardens, fostering ecological learning and a culture of inclusivity, sustainability and connection to nature.

Sandy is an advocate for social impact and inclusion, currently Head of Delivery and Services at CAHN (Caribbean and African Health Network), leading projects across the UK, including advocacy and domestic abuse services. Dedicated to amplifying unheard voices, she has shared her story at TEDx Salford University and continues to support the University through activities that inspire students. 

She also sits on several local decision-making bodies, including the Board of Governors at Cardinal Langley Roman Catholic High School, the Manchester City Council Domestic Abuse Partnership Board, and the School Admission Appeal Panel in Salford, advocating for fairer policies and lasting positive change. Passionate about inclusion, Sandy draws on her experience as a public speaker, leader within the voluntary sector (VCSE), and UK Certified Linguist to champion local people and drive social change.

Mohamed is transforming education in Somalia to widen access for children from disadvantaged backgrounds and challenge gender barriers, providing more opportunities for girls. After overcoming significant challenges growing up during decades of civil conflict, he studied at Salford, earning a master’s in Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Returning home, Mohamed worked with the Somali Stability Fund before becoming Minister for Education, Culture and Higher Education in Galmudug state. He now develops policies to expand access to education for displaced and rural communities. His vision and leadership are already positively impacting thousands of young lives across Somalia.

Martina is the founder and Creative Director of Tracing Steps Theatre & Dance Company, dedicated to making the arts accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Passionate about inclusivity, she creates spaces where creativity can flourish, encouraging everyone, whatever their background or experience, to explore movement, theatre and storytelling. 

A proud Culture Pioneer for her hometown of Middleton through the Culture Co-op, Martina champions local talent and cultural growth. She also serves on the steering group for the Rochdale Borough Culture Network, shaping initiatives that connect communities through the arts. Through her work, she inspires people to take up more space on stage and in life, and to stand proudly as themselves.

Ryan is a leading bioinformatics and agricultural genomics scientist. He has applied Next Generation Sequencing and advanced genetic analysis at the Earlham Institute and CIMMYT, addressing critical agricultural challenges such as gene resistance in wheat and improving crop yields. 

Since 2020, as Genetics and Genomics Platform Manager at Limagrain Europe, he has led his team through major transformation, implementing a bioinformatics strategy integrating pangenomics and automated genome assembly. Ryan has authored over 16 publications in leading journals and continues to mentor young scientists, inspiring the next generation of global research leaders.

Sadia is a leader in civic engagement, interfaith dialogue, and community cohesion, reflecting the values of the University of Salford. As Programme Director at FODIP (The Forum for Discussion of Israel and Palestine), she leads interfaith dialogues between Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and other communities on issues related to Israel, Palestine, and wider social cohesion. She has secured multi-year National Lottery funding for social cohesion programmes and supports leadership initiatives for women, young people, and underrepresented groups. Sadia also contributes to policy and advisory networks on refugee rights, anti-Muslim hate, and international conflicts. Through public forums, workshops, and collaborative campaigns, she empowers communities and drives measurable impact locally and globally.

MSc Medical Electronics, Class of 1975

Dr Mohapatra has held senior leadership roles in healthcare for over 35 years, most recently as Chairman, President, and CEO of Quest Diagnostics. He has championed patient empowerment and accountability, improving care and reducing costs. Previously, he contributed to the development and commercialisation of MRI technology at Picker International. Dr Mohapatra serves on boards including Leidos Inc., Malaria No More, and Safe Water Networks, and is a Trustee of Rockefeller University. 

In 2024, the Mohapatra Family Foundation donated £50,000 to the University of Salford to support a proof-of-concept project on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, reflecting his ongoing commitment to research and social impact.

Madalena is a Junior Development Researcher in unscripted television, specialising in innovative factual entertainment and high-stakes reality formats. She currently works alongside the team behind The Traitors, Gogglebox and Race Across the World. Born in Portugal and raised in Manchester, she gained early experience volunteering at Sheffield DocFest and working with Purple Productions and Salamanda Media. After graduating, she joined The Network and interned at ITV’s MultiStory Media before being selected for Studio Lambert’s highly competitive SPARK Development Traineeship and relocating to London. 

She’s grateful to Maire Tracey for providing a strong foundation and supporting her first steps into the creative industry.

Laura is an accomplished wildlife camera operator whose work spans projects with Nat Geo, the BBC, and other major outlets worldwide. She has shared her expertise with students through mentoring and masterclasses, supporting them in preparing for their final projects. Laura’s film Pantanal: A Charred Wetland, which explores the impact of Brazil’s devastating fires on the ecosystem, earned 21 official festival selections and won nine awards. 

She has also contributed as a speaker at Wildscreen Festival and on the LGBTQ+ Storytellers Panel, inspiring the next generation of filmmakers through her creativity, technical skill, and commitment to storytelling with impact.

Sam is Head of Organisational Development at the Equality and Human Rights Commission, leading culture transformation, employee experience, and strategic HR initiatives. With prior leadership roles across education, tech, and hospitality, she champions people-first strategies that drive inclusive organisational change. Through her Return Stronger LinkedIn series, Sam shares honest, empowering insights on parental leave and workplace reintegration. 

Committed to lifelong learning, she has gained credentials in inclusion, public speaking, and international business. Sam’s blend of empathy, clarity, and influence is shaping the future of HR leadership, unlocking potential for organisations and individuals while redefining what it means to lead with people at the centre.

As former NUS President, Zamzam represented over seven million students, boosting voter turnout and co-founding Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK). She has worked with UNESCO, the European Commission, and COP26 preparation teams, advancing youth-led climate and education initiatives. Founder of Somalis for Sustainability, and with roles at Julie’s Bicycle and Generation Climate Europe, Zamzam bridges grassroots action and policy, empowering underrepresented communities. Her leadership in movement building, strategic campaigns, and international advocacy continues to inspire change, demonstrating a rare ability to combine vision, action and tangible societal impact.

PhD Public Health, Wellness at Work & Behavioural Medicine (OD), Class of 2024

Since completing his PhD, Lawrence has transformed public health in Ghana. As National Coordinator for Port Health, he developed key strategic documents, established the Port Health Department, and in 2024 was appointed Deputy Director, overseeing 66 points of entry. He has led cross-border pathogen management initiatives with Sierra Leone, developed mortality surveillance plans, and delivered national capacity-building programmes in infection prevention, sanitation, and vaccination. 

Lawrence also serves as an adjunct lecturer at Ensign Global University, introducing courses on Occupational Health and Safety. His rapid rise from emergency department doctor to national public health leader reflects his exceptional leadership and strategic impact.

BSc Social Policy, Class of 2017

Matthew is a political commentator, policy advisor, and anti-homelessness campaigner, regularly seen on BBC, GB News, Times Radio, Talk TV, and LBC. Dubbed Britain’s “Favourite Lefty,” he’s praised for his no-nonsense, common-sense approach to social and political issues. 

Born in Stockport, Matthew was homeless at 17, sleeping rough for almost a year before turning his life around through education and work in Parliament. He now speaks at major events including Newsnight, The Oxford Union, and The Fabian Society. Alongside his media work, he supports charities tackling homelessness and mental health, with interests in politics and sport.

MSc Counselling & Psychotherapy (Professional Practice), Class of 2024

Abel is a queer trans therapist who specialises in working with neurodivergence, sexuality, gender identity, and religious trauma. He left the NHS in 2023 to found T4T Counselling, his own private therapy practice. Since then, he has been proud to be part of groups such as the Therapy and Social Change Network (TaSC) and Therapists Against Conversion Therapy and Transphobia (TACTT), and to be involved in founding a new professional body — the Psychological Society for Inclusive, Intersectional and Queer Communities (PSIIQC). Through his fundraising project, the Trans Therapy Fund, he has offered free therapy to local trans+ people who would otherwise be unable to afford it and remains committed to making therapy financially accessible to marginalised groups.

MSc Cyber Security, Threat Intelligence & Forensics, Class of 2023

Kolawole is the Founder of Cyber Aware Group and is known for blending technical innovation with social impact. He tackles cybercrime through education, awareness, and AI-powered solutions that protect vulnerable communities. Alongside leading Cyber Aware Group, Kolawole works with Citizens Advice Manchester and trains hundreds as a Cisco Networking Academy Instructor. In the past 18 months, he has received the Cisco Instructor of Service Award and the Salford Professional Bronze Award, spoken at major industry events, and mentored young people and underrepresented groups, inspiring the next generation of cyber professionals.

BSc Biomedical Science, Class of 2016

Born and raised in Salford, Liam has built a distinguished medical career while supporting aspiring clinicians. After excelling in Biomedical Sciences at Salford, he co-founded GEMMSPA, mentoring students aiming for graduate-entry Medicine, Dentistry, and Physician Associate courses. He graduated from Swansea Medical School with top-decile marks and the highest OSCE score, and completed rotations across acute medicine, A&E, ICU, psychiatry, and cardiology. 

Now a GP registrar in Warrington with a focus on frailty and elderly care, Liam continues to mentor students and develop practical teaching programmes, demonstrating a strong commitment to education and clinical excellence.

PhD Bioengineering, Class of 2020

Anna is an Italian researcher specialising in prosthetics, with a decade of experience in the field. She earned her BSc and MSc in Biomedical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, gained industry experience in carbon fibre prosthetic feet, and completed her PhD at the University of Salford in 2020, including a research secondment at Northwestern University. 

She is now a postdoctoral researcher at the SoftBots Lab, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, contributing to the award-winning SoftFoot prosthetic foot. Through mentoring, science festivals, and outreach, Anna shares her expertise to inspire innovation and promote accessibility and social inclusion in prosthetic technology.

BSc Finance & Accounting, Class of 2001

Suzanne is Chief Finance Officer at Northern Care Alliance NHS Group and has shown exceptional commitment to supporting Accounting and Finance students at Salford. With over 24 years of senior-level NHS experience and almost 10 years at board level, she has held leadership roles at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust, Pennine Care NHS FT, and North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust. Suzanne has created opportunities for students through internships, placement years, and professional guidance, and contributes to the Employer Advisory Board while speaking at events such as the Accounting Society launch. She also chairs the National Future Focused Finance Leadership Group and is a University of Salford Council Member.

Erin is an Assistant Producer at BBC Sport who consistently volunteers her time to help current students break into the television industry. Since graduating, she has returned for networking days, “Next Steps” events, and RTS student panels, sharing her experience and advice on sports journalism and networking. 

Her approachable and honest insight inspires students while strengthening links between the University and the UK sports media scene. Erin’s commitment as an alumna reflects her genuine passion for giving back and supporting the next generation of talent.

Sami is a globally recognised DEI and HR leader with over 20 years of international experience. He currently works in Strategic Projects in Inclusive Experiences and Technology (IXT) across Amazon globally, helping to transform inclusion by making it intrinsic to all operations, products, and services. A Salford Business School alumnus, he volunteers on the Industry Advisory Board, shaping the curriculum with inclusive and global perspectives. Sami also shares insights through podcasts and videos on DEI, AI, and inclusive leadership, inspiring students and bridging academia and industry. Passionate about creating opportunities for underrepresented talent, he serves as a role model for students and emerging leaders worldwide.
