Salford Business School research is setting a path to shape thinking and the application of technology in a post-pandemic and post-Brexit world. Our aim is to create business school research and solutions for the myriad challenges of Industry 4.0 and the ethical and legal issues facing society. Our research acts as the integrator for a diversity of disciplines, the translator from technology to management (and back again) and as the critical voice in the need to adopt of technology fully recognising the human and social impact that these decisions bring. We are building a vibrant and industry focussed research culture that lets a diverse range of academics create meaningful and impactful research for the good of society.

Research Case Studies
Improving Productivity Using Integrated Project Delivery
Dr Moheeb Abualqumboz’s research, using an integrated project delivery (IPD) approach, aims to:-
- establish a culture of continuous improvement
- develop an understanding and ability to analyse operating systems, training and processes in order to identify productivity improvements
- develop senior management roles within our industry partner’s (PLP Construction) systems and work practices.
Physical fitness and digital technologies – exploring fan motivations with Fan Fit
Research funded by: Nesta
Fan Fit is a white label fitness app project run by Dr. Alex Fenton for several major sports clubs. The Nesta Healthier Lives Data fund was used to create a new rebranded version for fans of Rangers FC called Fit Bears. The research explored the impact of this intervention through surveys, interviews, focus groups and netnography.
Dynamic capabilities expediting the transition to A IoT: The convergence of AI and IoT

Research Brief - Technology researchers and industry analysts alike credit the Internet of Things (IoT) as the next major digital, economic and societal innovation enabled by the Internet. Industry analysts estimate the IoT will create a global economic impact of nearly 10 trillion US$ with over 75 billion connected devices by 2025. IoT is an integral part of the current industrial revolution often called Industry 4.0. IoT evolves in three phases - Connecting the Things with sensors to the Internet, the applications layer to collect the data from the Things and lastly IoT business models created as an outcome of intelligence from the data.
This research explores the role of dynamic capabilities in creating a competitive advantage for industrial manufacturing companies rendering Internet of Things as a service, using IoT and AI.
PhD Researcher: Shobha B H Gowda
Investigation of human aspects of cyber security and technology to facilitate SMEs’ digital transformation strategy
As part of a research team from Salford Business School, Yun Chen is working with multiple-skill teams from other departments such as the School of Science Engineering and Environment (SEE) in the University of Salford. She is responsible for investigating and working on human aspects of cyber security and technology to facilitate SMEs’ digital transformation strategy. The project also includes gathering business requirements and horizon scanning on good practice of business model innovation related to cyber security in preparation of SME support.
Understanding digital events
Research funded by: British Academy Fellowship
Dr David Kreps was recently a British Academy Mid-Career Fellow for 12 months, undertaking research into the personal experience of today’s always-on digital world for two different cohorts – one of 18-25 year olds, and one of over 65s – and analysing them from the perspective of process philosoph.
