Meet the team
The Safeguarding and Prevent Team sits within the Student Cases, Conduct & Safeguarding Team in Student Experience and Support. We are based in University House. We are responsible for all Safeguarding (including Prevent) matters at the university.
The team:
- Manages all safeguarding issues, often with involvement from the Schools and other Professional areas.
- Provides advice and guidance to students and colleagues.
- Provides training in Safeguarding and Prevent for colleagues and students.
- Manages the annual Prevent return to the Office for Students.
- Manages the roles of the Designated Safeguarding Officers and the Steering Group.

Anji Gardiner - Designated Safeguarding Lead
Anji is the University of Salford’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and is based within Student Experience and Support. She has worked within Higher Education for over 28 years and previously worked at the University of Hull. Her time at the University of Hull included working within clinical practice, as a senior academic within the Faculty of Health and latterly as Director of Student Services.
Anji’s team is responsible for managing complex cases and student conduct at the University. She is also the University’s designated lead for Prevent, the Student Minds Mental Health Charter and is leading the university's gender-based violence, harassment and hate agenda.
Arron Pile - Designated Deputy Safeguarding Lead & Prevent Officer
Arron is the University of Salford’s Designated Deputy Safeguarding Lead and Prevent Officer and is based in Student Experience and Support. He has worked at the University in various roles around Diversity & Inclusion, Specialist Student Support and Conduct and Safeguarding for well over twenty years. He founded the National Network for the Education of Care Leavers (NNECL) and has been Co-Chair of its Board of Trustees for eight years where he is also the Safeguarding Lead.
Arron sits on various groups around safeguarding and Prevent for the University including Salford Community Cohesion group and Resilience forums. He represents the University of Salford’s Channel panel and on the Greater Manchester Prevent Steering Group.
Julia Lumb - Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and Student Cases Manager
Julia Lumb serves as the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and Student Cases Manager, playing a key role in supporting student wellbeing and upholding the university’s commitment to a safe and inclusive learning environment. In her current role, Julia oversees complex student casework, including safeguarding concerns, disciplinary matters, and support to study processes, in addition to her Safeguarding responsibilities. She works closely with academic departments, support services, and external agencies to ensure that student issues are managed sensitively, fairly, and in line with university policies.
With a strong background in student support and case management, Julia brings a thoughtful and proactive approach to safeguarding, ensuring that staff and students receive appropriate guidance and interventions when facing challenges. Her work is central to promoting a culture of care, accountability, and resilience across the university community.
