Biography
Tim Pigott is a Lecturer in Physiotherapy in the School of Health and Society, teaching on the MSc Physiotherapy programme, where he leads the Neuromuscular Management and Rehabilitation module. His research applies biomechanics, electromyography and neuromuscular electrical stimulation to injury, rehabilitation and return to performance in runners and cyclists, and extends to physiotherapy education and adult learning theory. Recent work includes cauda equina screening in community musculoskeletal services, systematic reviews of Pilates and yoga in chronic musculoskeletal conditions, and inertial-sensor measurement in cyclists and riders.
He supervises research at MSc and PhD level and practises as a sports physiotherapist, where his applied work supports knowledge exchange between research and clinical and coaching settings. In 2024 he received a Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Commendation for producing evidence-based content for clinicians. He welcomes enquiries from prospective postgraduate researchers with interests in running and cycling injury, rehabilitation and biomechanics.
Areas of Research
Running and cycling injury, rehabilitation and return to performance — biomechanics, electromyography (EMG), load and gait, bike fitting.
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and TENS — applications in rehabilitation, pain management and performance.
Musculoskeletal rehabilitation and clinical reasoning — cauda equina screening, tendinopathy, and systematic review of exercise interventions including Pilates and yoga.
Physiotherapy education and adult learning — patient education, work-based and postgraduate learning, and the use of technology in clinical education.
Wearable and inertial sensing in movement assessment — sensor-based measurement and digital tools for rehabilitation.
