Biography
Geoff is a Programme Leader and Senior lecturer in Accounting and Finance within Salford Business School. Apart from teaching commitments, Geoff has a has a strong background in working with employers and supporting students in becoming ready for the world of work. Geoff worked in Further Education for many years teaching 16–18-year-old students who wanted to progress into accounting as a career, and teaching AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualifications to employees working within the accounting sector.
As a Career Ready (The Career Ready Programme | Career Ready) alumnus, Geoff set up employer led Advisory Boards, with senior personnel from organisations such as BDO, RSM, BNY Mellon, ITV and Lloyds Banking Group, to provide students with six-week paid internships and access to a business mentor. At Salford Business School Geoff continues to work with employers, the SBS Employability team and students, in encouraging them to do a Professional Placement Year.
His research at Salford focuses on the benefits of students doing a placement year and the advantages to employers in sourcing ideal recruits – a conduit between education and employment. For his MBA, Geoff’s research focused on the benefits of doing work placements and encouraging students with lower levels of social capital and/or socio-economic backgrounds to make the most of the opportunities a placement provides. There is clear evidence of the positive and beneficial impact placements have on overall degree classifications and employability outcomes.
