Biography
Craig Johnson is a Teaching Fellow in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of Salford. He holds a BA (Hons.) in English and Sociology from the University of Chester and an MA in Gender and Women’s Studies and English from Lancaster University.
Craig trained as a therapeutic counsellor at Stockport College and is a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. He has experience across private practice, voluntary sector counselling, mental health support groups, and counselling education.
Alongside his university role, Craig runs a private counselling practice supporting adults with anxiety, bereavement, relationship difficulties, disability, identity, low mood, and life transitions. His work is grounded in warmth, accessibility, relational depth, and a commitment to inclusive therapeutic practice.
Areas of Research
Craig’s research interests include:
• Counselling, social justice, and the wider social contexts of emotional distress
• Disability, embodiment, desire, and the representation of disabled bodies
• Feminist approaches to counselling and psychotherapy
• Gender, identity, masculinity, sexuality, class, grief, and marginalisation
• Person-centred therapy, Transactional Analysis, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: Integrative counselling practice
• The relationship between lived experience, reflexivity, and therapeutic work
• Bibliotherapy, reflective writing, and the use of literature to explore selfhood, relationships, and emotional experience
• Counselling education and the development of ethically aware, socially responsive practitioners
Craig currently contributes to teaching and learning across counselling and psychotherapy programmes at the University of Salford, including:
• Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Skills (Level 4)
• Intermediate Counselling Skills 1 & 2 (Level 5)
• Preparation for Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice (Level 5)
• Professional Practice (Level 6)
