CGI of third platform at Salford Crescent

The University Art Collection team are working with Network Rail to find an artist who can deliver a permanent legacy artwork to celebrate the station’s new third platform, due to open this autumn.

The commission for Network Rail will have a budget of £20,000 to cover artist fees, costs and expenses. Proposals are invited from UK based artists or collectives and are open to artistic interpretation in a variety of different mediums including sculpture, mural, installation, sound and digital.

The University is in the process of regenerating its buildings and estates as part of its Campus Connectivity Plan, and its collaboration with Network Rail is part of this project.

Lindsay Taylor, Director of the University of Salford Art Collection, said: “Salford Crescent train station is a major hub for people travelling to and from our campuses at Peel Park and Frederick Road, so we were delighted when Network Rail asked us to collaborate and to help lead the search for the right artist.

“Network Rail wants a creative, original tribute which recognises Salford’s rich history, industrial heritage and thriving culture scene. The University’s Art Collection is expert at forging partnerships across our region so we jumped at the chance to help find a good match. The fact it will be installed during Salford’s centenary makes it even more special.”

Si Taylor, principal programme sponsor at Network Rail said: “We’re investing £21m at Salford Crescent to build an additional third platform, which will improve passenger experience and reduce train delays. We’re very excited to work with the Art Collection team at University of Salford as they have a wealth of experience working with fantastic artists, to find an inspiring artwork that will celebrate the culture and heritage of Salford and be proudly displayed at the station for years to come.”

Stuart Taylor, Northern’s director of service delivery in Greater Manchester said: “We fully support this exciting project and are looking forward to seeing an artist produce a something special, which celebrates Salford and its proud history. We have an array of artwork, created by professionals and talented amateurs, at dozens of stations across our vast network and it has been well received by our customers.”

The artwork will commemorate the former Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal which used to run along the same site. To see more details on the open call and how to apply please visit the University website.

The deadline for proposal submissions is 9am Monday 23rd February 2026.

The University of Salford Art Collection contains over 900 items including work by L S Lowry and Bridget Riley. It is the catalyst for a range of student and graduate opportunities, collaborative commissions and cultural partnerships with organisations from across the North West.
