University partners with MACFEST for return of Muslim Arts Awards
The University of Salford is delighted to be partnering with The Muslim Arts and Culture Festival (MACFEST) again ahead of their second annual Muslim Arts Awards in November.
MACFEST have created a national contest for all Muslim artists over the age of 18. Eligible artists can submit up to two pieces of artwork for any of the following categories - painting, calligraphy, drawing and photography. Artists can submit up to two pieces of work.
Shortlisted artists will be able to see their art on display, as part of an exhibition at our New Adelphi building on Tuesday 20 November.
Last year's winners included Mohamad Aaqib Anvarmia for Drawing, Mahvish Javed for Calligraphy, Shireen Malik for Photography and Atefeh Seifi and Carol Souza won the painting award. Over 40 artists submitted work with 23 artworks then selected for the competition phase.
For any eager artists hoping to enter this year’s competition, make sure you apply as soon as possible, as entries will close on Sunday 15 June.
This is the second year MACFEST have held their Muslim Arts Awards at the University. Last year’s event was hosted by comedian Adbdullah Afzal and included a terrific night of entertainment, including performances by North West Turkish Folk Dance Group and singers Sajal Chaudhury and Fadi Edel.
The University will have Sam Ingelson, Associate Dean: Enterprise and Engagement for the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology, Brendan Fletcher, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for BA Fine Art and Paul Vivian, Director of Art and Design, on the awards’ judging panel.
MACFEST are currently delivering a range of events through to July, including a Youth Festival at Levenshulme High School and a Festival of Calligraphy and Arts.
With numerous workshops, guest speakers and activities, these festivals are an integral part of MACFEST’s mission to celebrate diversity across Greater Manchester and beyond.
MACFEST has been running for six years and was established by founder and Salford alumna Qaisra Shahraz MBE.
