Student trio showcase Barbour designs at London Fashion Week
A trio of Salford students and graduates have had their designs for fashion brand Barbour showcased at London Fashion Week after being shortlisted from a national competition.
MA Fashion Design student Sunny Ivanov and BA Fashion Design graduates Leo Hill-Daniel and Erin Hammond all presented their wares at the Saatchi Gallery during London Fashion Week. The trio were part of a group of five picked from universities across the country.
They had been selected as winners of the British Fashion Council and Barbour’s 2026 Tartan Reimagined competition in which students were asked to provide their own interpretation on the iconic Barbour sett whilst staying true to its heritage.
The exhibition was featured across the national press during the week, including The Telegraph and The Observer, with master’s student Sunny speaking to the former at the launch event.
Sunny, who is also a graduate of our undergraduate course, developed an oversized take on the brand’s wax jacket for his piece for the exhibition.
He told the Telegraph: “I wanted a coat that you could wear from the morning dropping the kids off at school to going to the market and to the pub in the evening.”
Sunny graduated back in 2021, working as a fashion stylist and designer before deciding to return to Salford to undertake his master’s.
On the course, he said: “Studying at Salford has been a hugely important part of my journey. This course has given me the support, confidence and opportunities to develop both creatively and professionally.
“The balance between learning and real industry practice has been especially valuable. Through the course, the guidance of the Programme Leader, Bashir Aswat, and the wider team, alongside a great deal of hard work and a genuine love for fashion, I was able to enter the industry straight after my BA and continue building my career ever since.
“Many of my achievements and professional experiences are closely connected to the foundation, encouragement and opportunities I received while studying at Salford.”
Leo added: “Studying at Salford shaped my work ethic and how I approach problems. I learned to think differently and manage intense workloads while staying creatively indulgent in my own design practice. I’m the process of setting up my own studio and will soon begin both commission work and clothing sales.”
