Salford telecommunications expert to host webinar on the rise of the camera phone

Categories: School of Science, Engineering and Environment

What is the number one feature that you look for when buying a smart phone? For many the camera is at the top of the list.

Professor Nigel Linge is the University of Salford's telecommunications expert and will be exploring this topic in depth at a free webinar hosted by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) in January 2021.

He said: "Of all of the features added to a mobile phone it is perhaps the camera that has had the biggest impact on society. Over a span of twenty years the camera has evolved from a quirky accessory that manufacturers didn't really want as an essential feature to a detail that they all now proactively market to differentiate their smartphones. Meanwhile for us, the users, having a camera turned on our personal lives all of the time has transformed the use of social media, made selfies mainstream and turned us all into on-the-spot news reporters.

My upcoming webinar will explore the technological innovations that have driven the development of the camera phone and examine how it has both transformed photography and impacted society."
