Late last year, Ali Aziz Janjua, Business & Law School Officer at Salford SU, represented the University at the International Students’ Day Reception hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for International Students (APPG) in the House of Commons.
Nominated by the British Universities’ International Liaison Association (BUILA), Ali spoke alongside fellow student leaders from across the UK about the contributions international students make to communities, universities and the wider economy.
During his keynote, Ali described the tangible ways international students shape the communities they join. He highlighted how students contribute economically by supporting local businesses, bringing global perspectives to classrooms and workplaces and driving innovation across the region. He spoke about the cultural and social impact of international students, noting how they help build vibrant, inclusive communities while advocating for wellbeing, belonging and representation.
Ali also shared examples from the Greater Manchester Students’ Partnership, explaining how student-led initiatives are improving housing, transport and access to health services, ensuring that the voices of students are central to the decisions that affect them.
On speaking, Ali said: "It was an honour to speak at the APPG for International Students reception at the House of Commons in Westminster, and to share my experience as an international student at the University of Salford who has gone on to become a student leader. I highlighted both the contributions international students make to communities like Greater Manchester and some of the challenges we are currently facing.
"International students come to the UK to learn, grow and give back, and it’s important that our voices are part of the conversations shaping the future of international education. Thankful to BUILA for nominating me for this wonderful opportunity."
The event included student reflections from UCAS and UKCISA and was attended by parliamentarians, education leaders and international student representatives. It provided an opportunity for students to share personal experiences while contributing to conversations that influence policy and support for international students in the UK.
Nancy Cooke, Director of International Development at the University of Salford, said: “We are proud that Ali could represent the University of Salford and the wider Greater Manchester student community on a national stage. Events like this highlight the real impact of international students and the importance of ensuring their voices are heard in conversations that shape policy and community initiatives.”
