Salford Graduate makes the final round at NW Engineering Competition
A mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Salford has made the final five at the renowned IMechE North West Young Engineer of the Year Competition 2020.
The annual competition is nomination based, with entries submitted by peers and judged by a panel of industry experts. Salford graduate Corin Willams, was nominated for the award by lecturers at the university.
Corin said: “It was humbling to be put forward for the award, which is a reflection on my work and commitment to the course. My degree programme tuned me in to the mindset of an engineer and was aided by the extracurricular activities that we had the opportunity to be part of.
“As part of the challenge I was judged on my ability to design, create and run a device using a strict specification. I’d like to thank those who put me forward for the award. Their recognition has not gone unheard and I am extremely grateful.”
The ceremony for the 2020 NW IMechE Awards was due to be held in Manchester and has been postponed due the pandemic.
Georgina Harris, Director of Engineering said: “We are proud to have such incredibly talented students at the University of Salford. Our academics work in partnership with the industry to ensure that our students tackle real world engineering problems and gain the experience of working with professionals in their field.
“Corin is determined and hardworking: he takes great pride in the work that he does. This was recognised by his lecturers as well as myself. We are all delighted that he was a finalist in this hard-fought competition. This not only highlights the calibre of students that we have at the university but also the outstanding team of academics teaching them."
Corin graduated from the university this summer and is hoping to enjoy some downtime before applying for a graduate job. He added: “I’m keeping my options open as there are some very interesting opportunities within different sectors and I’m always enthused by a new challenge.”
