Royal meeting for Salford wildlife staff and students
Salford staff and students from SEE School met HRH Anne, Princess Royal last week as part of a visit to the Field Studies Council in Millport, Scotland.
As part of the Marine Biology Ocean Challenges core module, level 5 students from across Marine Biology, Zoology, Biological Science and Wildlife Conservation courses were on a residential field course to the Field Studies Council when they met HRH Princess Royal.
HRH Princess Anne is a Patron of the Field Studies Council, and visited the Millport centre to meet students, staff and researchers – and learn more about ongoing marine science education and research activities.
Accompanying the students were Salford’s Dr Mariana Do Amaral Camara Lima, Lecturer in Marine Biology, and Dr Chiara Benvenuto, Associate Professor in Marine Biology.
Dr Mariana said: “Seeing HRH Princess Anne take such an interest in the Marine Biology field was an excellent opportunity for our level 5 students – protecting marine life is so important now more than ever, and it is great to have a Royal on our side.”
Throughout the trip, students developed practical skills in species identification, biodiversity monitoring, transect and quadrat sampling, ecological data analysis, and teamwork, whilst working with live marine specimens and real ecological datasets.
Students also gained hands-on experience during the field course, in marine ecological surveying across rocky shores, sandy shores, and boat-based sampling activities.
