It is with great sadness that we mark the life of Jean Oglesby CBE, who has passed away. She will be remembered fondly by all of those at the University of Salford as a leading force in philanthropy across the North West and a notable member of our supporter community.
Jean Oglesby OBE
Jean, and her late husband Michael, co-founded the Oglesby Charitable Trust in 1992. This was a decision that would see them impact the lives of thousands through an incredibly varied portfolio of funded partners and projects. Her passions ranged from support of the arts to impactful scientific research and her support, through the trust, has created lasting change. Jean and Michael’s legacy continues through the ongoing work of Jane Oglesby, Chris Oglesby, and the wider family.
The Oglesby generosity extended to a significant project at The University of Salford, supporting the families of children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This condition is caused by drinking alcohol in pregnancy which leads to life-long damage to the brain in children with FASD. The condition is more common than autism but significantly underdiagnosed. The transformational support of the Oglesby Trust facilitated a large scale, and successful, programme of support for the parents of these children.
Nic Beech, Vice Chancellor of University of Salford, said: ‘We are all terribly saddened to hear this news and send our sincere condolences to the Oglesby family during this difficult time. Jean’s enduring support and impact is an inspiring model for how we can all endeavour to leave the world a better place than we found it. She will be greatly missed.’
From everyone at The University of Salford, we offer our condolences to Jean’s family and friends. Her memory will remain a cherished part of our community.
