What does it mean to make markets moral? Salford’s own Professor Katy Mason will explore this question in her inaugural lecture this October.
Katy, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Salford Business School, will deliver her lecture ‘Making & Shaping Moral Markets’ on Thursday 30 October in the Chapman Building at our Peel Park campus. Drawing on over 20 years of research, Katy will show how markets are not simply “out there” but are constantly made and shaped through our collective actions (and inactions).
Her talk will use case studies from the commercialisation of science, digital connected places, and even the market for Santa Clause to reveal how everyday practices can create new rules and devices that transform markets. She will ask what might happen if we could mobilise these forces differently: could we re-shape markets for the good of people and planet?
Katy said: “Markets affect every part of our lives; from the goods and services we use each day to the big global challenges we face as a society. Too often they are seen as inevitable or beyond our control, but they are shaped by people. My lecture will explore how we can rethink and re-shape markets, so they work in ways that create real value for both society and the planet.”
Katy joined the University of Salford in December 2024 from Lancaster University Management School, where she was Professor of Markets and Management and Associate Dean for Research. She is currently President of the British Academy of Management, a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, and a Cabinet Office Policy Fellow.
The lecture is open to the public and promises to be a thought-provoking event that brings together business, policy and society.
Registration for the lecture will begin at 5.30pm and the talk will last from 6pm to 6.45pm before a Q&A with Katy afterwards. A drinks reception will then follow from 7pm.
