The first ever award in memory of a Salford student murdered in a case of mistaken identity has been presented at a ceremony in the Lowry Theatre.
Diana Housley has been awarded the Aya Hachem Memorial Prize for Best Civic Contribution for her work to help her local community through voluntary work.
Diana was nominated by Professor Vish Maheshwari, Associate Dean Academic – Student Experience Salford Business School. He said: “Diana has navigated and thrived in her studies, despite the difficulties of being a parent to a young child.
“She has been doing a lot for her local community of Trafford, particularly during and post covid. As a parent herself she has volunteered to be a ‘Parent Champion for Trafford Council’ which involves amongst other things, supporting other marginalised or isolated parents’ in navigating and accessing what support is available to them.”
Diana is the first in her family to attend university. Throughout her time studying she has been an active member of the MADA (mooting and debate) society and a valued member of SILKS Law Clinic, which offers free legal advice to those who need it but who might not be able to afford to pay.
She also volunteered for Enactus Charity in Salford, particularly in fundraising for children in need and period poverty and has been involved in ‘Behind the Bars’ at Gorse Hill Studios, a youth charity aimed at reducing the risks of crime and violence for young people. There, she offered technical support on a range of music projects and events. All whilst studying and raising a young child.
The Aya Hachem Memorial Prize is named in memory of much-loved student Aya who was accidentally and tragically killed in a drive by shooting in May 2020. Aya was part way through her law course at University of Salford at the time and wanted to become a solicitor. She was awarded a posthumous degree at a ceremony in December last year.
