Gerry Mason Engineering Excellence Scholarship Program is open for the next cohort

The scholarship programme was established by the late Morson Group Founder Gerry Mason with the legacy continuing and is now spearheaded by his son Ged Mason. Five scholarship places are being offered as part of the 2020/21 intake in Engineering subjects, providing students the opportunity to study for a degree and not be deterred by the cost.

Ged Mason, OBE, CEO if the Morson Group said: “Our collaboration with the University of Salford continues to strengthen and we’re delighted to have facilitated the creation of the Morson Engine Room and the Maker Space. This is a major technical facility to inspire future engineers into STEM career pathways, and particularly females, whilst providing hands-on training to ensure the next generation of talent is industry ready with the skills, experience and knowledge that employers want and need. The entire team at Morson embraces this vision and we’re extremely proud of the work being done at Salford to help achieve this.

"We’re also delighted to be continuing our support of the Gerry Mason Engineering Scholarship this year, which was founded in my late father’s name. It was his drive and ambition to engage with local young people and provide highly-skilled career pathways regardless of socio-economic background, gender, race and more – a core value that still rings true within Morson today. I wish each scholar every success in their future endeavours, both personally and professionally.”

Invitation to apply has been sent out to students on eligible programmes with interested applicants hitting submit in early December.

Georgina Harris, Director of Engineering said: “We have an established relationship with the Morson Group and the Mason Family and are proud to offer this scholarship programme as an avenue to help young people achieve their ambition to pursue a career in Engineering. The calibre of applicants is incredibly high, and it is always a tough decision as we would like to give everyone a place. 

“Industry collaboration drives everything that we do at the University of Salford and it is what makes us different to other universities. Our programmes are tailored to addresses the skills gap in engineering and we are confident that upon graduation our students are ready for a career in this rewarding profession.”

The scholarships not only provide financial support for budding engineers, it also opens up the door for scholars to work on projects alongside the industry partner during their studies enhancing their employability as they gain real-life experience.

To date, there have been over 35 Gerry Mason graduating scholars with some securing a role with the Morson Group upon graduation.
