A Salford graduate has realised his childhood dream of a job in Formula One.

Despite being disappointed with his college grades Jonathan Wheater didn’t give up on his dream and after working for four years, applied to do Mechanical Engineering Degree at the University of Salford. He also took up the opportunity to be part of the Formula Student racing team while studying and had successful track days driving as well as helping design the car.

And thanks to all his hard work and taking advantage of extracurricular opportunities offered at Salford, Jonathan graduated last summer with a First Class Degree, and has just been appointed as Graduate Manufacturing Engineer at Mercedes, working on developing the team’s new engine for next year’s car.

Jonathan, from Rugby, said: “I got interested in racing and Formula One from when I was a toddler. My dad loved bike racing so it’s in my blood. I loved the smell of the engines from an early age.

“As a fan of Formula One since I could barely walk, I was glued to the TV every race weekend growing up. Now I've been given an incredible opportunity to be a part of the Mercedes family and contribute to the most successful power unit on the grid today, I almost can't believe it.

“After my college experience I did ‘t really think University was for me but then I realised I wanted to test myself. And when I started looking round Salford just stood out for me with all the investment going on. And I had an absolutely incredible time.

“Lecturers and everyone was so supportive during my time, I can’t speak highly enough of everyone. I want to thank everyone who has been on this journey with me the last few years. It was a lot of hard work and failure, but my perseverance paid off. Being able to drive the student race car across the finish line will be something I will never forget.

“I can’t wait to get started with Mercedes.”
